Summary
Flex-N-Gate is looking for an experienced Optics Engineer to join our Advanced Product Development team in Grand Rapids, MI (Allen Park location is possible with once-a-week travel to GR).
The Optical Engineer will be instrumental in developing new concepts for achieving customer objectives through the development phase. The candidate will join our Advanced Development

Job Duties
- Design and develop optical systems to be used for forward and signal lighting.
- Understand the optical requirements from a diverse customer base.
- Understand the legal requirements for both North American (NA) and European (EU) customers that define the angle and distribution of light on the road, understand the customer expectations that are above and beyond the legal requirements.
- Understand the development of Low Beam (LB) and High Beam (HB) and additionally design headlamps that meet adaptive dynamic beam (ADB) requirements for NA and EU.
- Furthermore, understand the performance of LB and HB for Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and Consumer Report (CR) scores.
- Work with staff in CAD, Electronics, Mechanical Assemblies, Mechatronics, Manufacturing and Prototyping.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years in headlamp development
- Minimum 5 years in signal lighting development
- Minimum of BS in Optics, Physics, Electronics or related field. An advanced degree is a plus.
- Proficient in the use of CAD software like Catia
- Proficient in the use of Optical Software like LucidShape, Zemax, CodeV
- Working with light measuring devices like Goniometer, spectral radiometer, sensors, etc.
- Willingness to grow in knowledge and applications
- Prefer an individual who has worked in a production plant setup
- Basic understanding of tooling parameters, injection molding, manufacturing and assembly
- Ability to identify industry trends, and develop technologies to address those trends.
- Ability to interface with the customer and have patience with the changes being pursued
- Communication within and outside the core team
- Presentation skills along with reporting results in a timely and comprehensive manner

Requirements
- 5-10 years automotive optical engineering experience in developing headlamp and signal light prescriptions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Optics or Physics is required. An advanced degree is an asset.
- Proficient in the use of Optical Simulation software - CATIA, LucidShape, ASAP.
- Working knowledge of lamp testing including goniophotometer, photometric fixturing, rapid prototyping evaluations of faceted and / or complex surfaces, projector lamps, (TIR) Total Internal Reflection lenses, isocandela comparisons of predictions to part.
- Ability to identify industry trends and develop technologies to address those trends.
- Ability to oversee advanced prototyping technologies for prove-out model development.
