Join our ESF Camps team at Gilman School in Baltimore as a Ropes Course-Alpine Tower Climbing Teacher and inspire young minds at camp!

As Ropes Course-Alpine Tower Climbing Teacher, you will teach and inspire campers, 3rd-10th grade (Senior Camp, Young Leaders Program), in the world of climbing, high ropes, belaying, harnesses/equipment etc. with emphasis on safety, skill development, and fun!

  • Estimated pay rate/range: $15.25-16/hour. Rate shown is estimated. Offered rate could vary based on experience and job responsibilities.

Requirements:

  • Climbing, Alpine Tower and/or Ropes Course Background: Preferably with background in climbing facility (high ropes, climbing walls…), and related equipment.
  • Certification(s): Ropes Course and/or Alpine Tower certification required. Related teaching and climbing facility certifications will be considered.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related work experience in the field preferred.
  • Experience: We are looking for experience teaching and working with children.
    • Previous experience in classroom teaching, fieldwork, or a minimum of two (2) years of ESF experience.
    • Previous experience working with children in a camp setting is preferred.
  • Hours: Typically, from 8: 15 am to 3: 45 pm, Monday to Friday, with opportunities for extended hours.
  • Schedule Commitment: Any schedule changes must be pre-approved by the site director.
  • Required Training: Complete all required ESF and state-mandated training and onboarding.
  • Dress Code: Maintain the "ESF Look" (camp uniform) and embody the spirit of the camp.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach & Inspire: Actively engage campers, offer support, and provide guidance.
    • Climbing and ropes course instruction to campers between the ages of 8 and 15 with various ability levels
    • Implement ESF curriculum; bring activity to life for campers through participation, support and guidance
  • Dive Into the Camp Day! Promote and lead daily activities and projects with enthusiasm, collaborating effectively with counselors and fellow instructors.
  • Safety & Positive Group Management: Ensure the safety and well-being of campers with emphasis on positive behavior and effective group management. Promptly report any concerns to the Site Director.
    • Enforce all climbing rules and regulations
    • Ensure safety of campers and team members in and out of the Ropes Course-Alpine Tower area
    • Supervision of the Ropes Course-Alpine Tower area, including equipment (proper set-up, supervision and maintenance)
  • Be the Ultimate Role Model: Supervise campers, while fostering a positive and safe environment.
    • Demonstrate ESF Core Values & Code daily, from “Gratitude” to “Bring It” daily.
    • Model the ESF Virtues of Character (Gratitude, Respect, Trustworthiness, Effort, Kindness, Positivity, Resilience, Community) in camp daily.
    • Adhere to all company policies.
  • Communication: Maintain clear, concise, and engaging communication with campers, families, peers, and our leadership team.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Directly report to and take guidance from the Camp Director, with additional accountability to the Site Director.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Push/pull, lift, and carry a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds across campus. Work outside, upright, and mobile for six (6) to eight (8) hours per day
  • Respond to emergencies, including running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and ascending stairs without undue exertion.
