Senior Design Researcher

Schneider Electric is seeking a design professional with expertise in user experience research and strategy. This individual will report to the digital design director for industrial products within the global design organization. The team is fast growing and want to do so healthily. Our mission to oversee digital design across Schneider Electric, infuse design culture into the company, and scale these efforts through systems and collaboration. We create consistent, enjoyable, and memorable experiences with meaningful outcomes around sustainability, decarbonization, and optimizing the switch renewable energy. This is design work with a purpose.

This role will be responsible for leading digital product research efforts within Schneider Electric's building energy and asset optimization software. This role will work transversely across 2 highly related digital energy teams to provide research best practices and mentorship to other designers, product managers, and innovation experts while also surfacing opportunities for strategic alignment. Successful candidates will have experience working across both exploratory and evaluative research stages in collaboration with other design professionals. Exploratory method experience should include defining research protocols for interviews, surveys, user co-creation sessions, and contextual inquiries. Evaluative experience should include running usability studies and progressive design concept evaluations with users.

In terms of work artifacts, candidates should show examples of protocols and discussion guides as well as how they creatively communicate research findings through journey maps, storyboards, personas, and concept diagrams. The result should be a clear understanding of the problem space with a set of actionable insights and recommendations. The work should focus on conclusions and their contribution to product and business success.

For this U.S. based position, the expected compensation range is $128, 000 - $147, 000 per year, which includes base pay and short-term incentive.

The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United

States. Our salary ranges are determined by reviewing roles of similar responsibility and level. Within the salary range, individual pay is determined by several factors including performance, knowledge, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your mission:

User-centered design. Apply different tools and methodologies required for the problem, timing, and context. Be transparent and guide colleagues in product management and engineering across stages of the design process.

Facilitation and co-design. Prepare and lead workshops to align teams and converge on a common product and service vision. Include others and motivate with curiosity, a constant interest to learn, and default to doing.

Culture and advocacy. Be a representative of design and user advocate within Schneider Electric. Promote our digital ecosystem, strengthen the brand, and form a unified experience.

Systems thinking. Expand and adjust perspectives to understand the problem space. Empathize with users and colleagues and appreciate a diversity of inputs.

Data driven. Know how to use and analyze qualitative and quantitative data in decision making. Design interactions that empower users with information and collect data as a natural part of the experience.

This job is for you:
  • 7+ years of experience as a design researcher
  • Bachelor's degree in a design field, human-computer interaction, fine arts, or equivalent experience.
  • Examples of regular collaboration across business functions.
  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates user-centered design approach & process, systems thinking, emphatic storytelling, and definition of design work through development.
  • Experience creating research protocols, synthesizing, and communicating findings.
  • Exceptional abilities to communicate complex information in written, visual, and verbal forms.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, structuring problem spaces, and complex domains & organizations.
  • Portfolio of research projects demonstrating human-centered design capabilities, design thinking approaches to problem solving, and both qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Willing to travel 10-20%

  • Experience working with B2B and B2C software products.
  • Experience working with and applying enterprise design systems.
  • Use of Figjam, Dovetail, Maze design tools.
  • Engagement in design communities and building design culture.
