Controller

Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries (Goodwill) is seeking an experienced controller to help lead our finance and accounting functions into our next phase of growth. As a key member of our leadership team, the Controller oversees all accounting, budget, payroll, audit, contract billing, and reporting functions. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will lead and develop a team of accounting professionals, ensuring financial accuracy, transparency and compliance across the organization. This role is ideal for a financial leader who likes to get hands-on to support their team as well as to work with operating leaders to support operations and reporting to external entities. 🔍 Key Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train, and manage the accounting team with a coaching approach that fosters continued professional growth and a collaborative, high-performing work environment
  • Oversee and drive all accounting operations to include general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, and fixed assets to ensure accurate and timely monthly and year-end closings; review processes and use of systems to improve efficiency.
  • Ensure the leadership team understand and adhere to financial policies and procedures; serve as a trusted internal advisor and a member of Leadership Forum
  • Partner with the CFO to manage the annual budget process, ensure data integrity, and proactively monitor budget-to-actual results; provide guidance to operational leaders
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, board reports, and other internal/external reports that clearly communicate financial performance and trends
  • Oversee payroll, timekeeping, and retirement plan administration, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely payments; actively engage with team to resolve technical issues as needed
  • Oversee billing and contract functions, ensuring compliance with funder agreements
  • Serve as the lead contact for financial audits, coordinating with external auditors, regulatory agencies, and funding entities; ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards
  • Provide budget support for funding proposals, ensuring they align with overall organizational operating budgets and financial goals
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, and nonprofit financial standards
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the use of financial and budgeting systems (SAGE INTACCT), payroll (Ceridian), reporting tools, workflows, and internal controls to support operational efficiency and transparency

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required (Master’s a plus)
  • CPA preferred, but not required
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience in an organization of comparable size with multiple business lines and revenue stream complexity
  • 3+ years successfully managing and developing a team; nonprofit experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in managing a broad set of accounting and finance functions including: general ledger, accounts payable and receivables, fixed assets, closings, financial reporting and audits, payroll, retirement plans, billing, and contracts
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills with the drive and willingness to help others identify and resolve issues
  • Team player who views leadership as a team sport and excels at building consensus across functional areas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to translate complex financial data for non-financial audiences
  • Highly adaptable and able to navigate change and complexity effectively
  • Proven ability to prioritize and delegate effectively while maintaining accuracy and focus in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Experience improving systems, processes, and workflows
  • Proven ability to work effectively across diverse teams and foster an inclusive, respectful workplace
  • Proficiency in financial software systems required: SAGE INTACCT and Ceridian preferred

This is an exciting opportunity for a results-driven leader to make a lasting impact on a growing and financially stable nonprofit dedicated to serving communities across Massachusetts. This role is based in Goodwill’s Boston headquarters and calls for a predominantly on-site presence.
