JOB DESCRIPTION

ENGINEERING INVENTORY AND PROCUREMENT SPECIALIST

I. BASIC FUNCTION

Build, manage, analyze, and continuously improve the procurement and inventory systems for the Asset Management Department to produce maximum vessel availability to enhance company revenue and optimized levels of spare part inventory to minimize asset downtime, all in a cost-effective manner for Canal Barge Company.

II. RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Design and implement an inventory management system that is accessible and able to track the status of equipment. The system should be:

  • Able to determine the current locations of inventory items.

  • Able to determine status of inventory items (being repaired, finished being repaired, etc.) in a quick manner.

  • Easy to navigate and accessible to all stakeholders.

2. Own and manage all aspects of inventory.

  • Work with vendors to get spares repaired in a timely and cost-effective manner and to a required level of quality.

  • Create purchase orders for vendors using the computerized maintenance system to ensure timely and accurate items needed.

  • Set up shipping of inventory to appropriate locations for projects and daily operations.

3. Analyze inventory levels to ensure maximum vessel availability.

  • Work with Port Engineers to determine inventory levels. This will include items for planned maintenance, unplanned maintenance, and daily operations. Determine which locations are strategically appropriate.

  • Work with Port Engineers to identify and establish critical spares that are difficult to procure and critical to the operation of our equipment. Identify and set up appropriate places for storage and ensure they are tracked and maintained appropriately.

  • Work with Procurement to submit bids for larger quantities of items.

  • Work with Procurement to identify preferred and/or critical suppliers to secure Master Service Agreements MSAs or other agreements to secure reliable service at a preferred cost.

4. Assist project manager and port engineers in planning shipyard projects.

  • Establish and maintain strong, positive working relationships with CBC shoreside and onboard employees, as well as with critical vendors.

  • Purchase long lead items for planned shipyard jobs.

  • Work with Sr. Port Engineer to ensure technical specs are correct before purchasing.

  • Regularly meet with the Port Engineers prior to projects, to ensure items get purchased in a timely and cost-effective manner.

  • Assist with annual budgeting for Vessel Engineering.

  • Utilize Sinex (computerized maintenance system) to look up historical maintenance information.

  • Occasionally visit shipyard projects and sometimes deliver parts if needed.

5. Support the corporate Procurement function.

  • Provide technical expertise to the Buyer designated to Asset Management.

  • Support the identification and cataloging of part descriptions, models & serial numbers within the Asset Management software system.

  • Manage the critical spare list for Boats and Barges.

III. RELATIONSHIP

The Engineering Inventory and Procurement Specialist supports the Asset Management department and reports to the Engineering Project Manager.

IV. MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Complete and accurate account of every piece of inventory for the boats and barges managed by a simple system.

  • All projects are fully supplied with ready-to-use equipment and parts.

  • Purchasing of equipment is done in a timely manner at the best value to CBC.

  • Processes undergo continuous evaluation for improvement.

V. EXPERIENCE

  • 2-5 years’ experience in procurement, inventory, or marine operations.

  • Self-starter, organized, team player, attentive to detail.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office.
