Job Summary

The Cath Lab Technologist performs cardiovascular/interventional procedures, patient education, and qualityassessment activities for the cardiovascular lab, under the direction of the Cath Lab coordinator, Director ofthe Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Service Line, and the labs interventional physicians. The technologist mustalso carry out all necessary technical/nontechnical tasks associated with invasive procedures and operationand maintenance of equipment used for such invasive procedures


JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiological Technology program or equivalent.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as Cath Lab technologist preferred
  • Prior Interventional Cath Lab experience - Cardiology interventions and Peripheral Interventions minimum 1year experience
  • Cardiac Device experiences - all pacemakers and cardiac implants
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, Coronary Shockwave, Atherectomy, Penumbra (Coronary aspiration).
  • Experience in Pre and Post op care --- Recovery
  • Canon Cath Lab experience, preferred

Required Licenses:

  • Radiologic Technologist
  • ARRT registered or registry eligible. If board eligible must be licensed within 6 months of hire.
  • Must hold a radiation operator's license in the state of Kentucky.
  • Current BLS & ACLS certifications

Required Skills:

  • Able to operate patient care equipment to perform patient care and assist with cardiovascular/interventionalprocedures
  • Able to concentrate and pay attention for periods of time up to 4 hours to perform clinical and QA functions
  • Able to respond to emergency signals and indicators in an effective manner
  • Able to operate hospital computer systems for QA reports and record keeping

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Must be within 30 minutes of MCCH.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

The work environment involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safetyeducation and health risk monitoring, working with sharps, chemicals, and infectious disease. Employees maybe required to use protective clothing and gear such as masks, gowns, gloves, goggles, lead aprons, andshields. Responsible for abiding by departmental safe operating procedures.

Able to lift 50lbs, to assist in transferring patients

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

o Performs imaging procedures
o Produces high quality procedures
o Selects proper imaging parameters on individual patient basis
o Safely operates equipment including computerized imaging system
o Provides general care to patients so that basic medical and comfort needs are satisfied
o Reacts in emergency situations to initiate immediate and appropriate treatment
o Properly screens patients for appropriate clinical information from relevant history and assesses thepatient’s physical, psychosocial, and educational needs from accompanying documents and by interviewbefore the procedure
o Assures the patient has an adequate understanding of the procedure, provides information and educationto patient/family regarding procedure
o Completes necessary documentation and record keeping in PACS system, on images, and consultation
o Maintains patient confidentiality, and performs other clerical functions as assigned
o Critiques final images for quality and prepares images for interpretation
o Access patient information and lab values in the EMR
o Maintains inventory of supplies and stocks areas with appropriate supplies
o May perform other departmental functions within the score of practice, as assigned
o Maintains professional relationships with co-workers and other hospital employees
o Must be able to effectively and efficiently work as a team member
o Periodically evaluates own service delivery
o Organizes resources to maximize productivity
o Assists with on call duties
o Maintains infection control, universal precautions and radiation safety
o Prepares sterile trays
o Maintains emergency equipment within the cardiac cath lab
o Accepts and supports changes in work assignments as related to department, hospital, and patient needs
Prepare patients and laboratory for Cardiac Catheterization procedures, observe/record patient condition, vital signs, and provide direct patient care pre, intra, and post procedure.
o Sets up lab using sterile technique
o Prepare sterile pack of instruments and catheters, drape equipment and patient to maintain sterile fields
o Prepare and calibrate equipment for procedure
o Position patient on X-ray/Catheterization table
o Operate digital flouro/acquisition of angio x-ray system
o Attach EKG to patient for monitoring/recording
o Provide comfort, teaching, and reassurance to patient during stay in laboratories
o Provide care appropriate to the age of patients undergoing catheterization (young adult to geriatric) andidentify each patient’s requirements and age specific needs
o Observe patient for possible discomfort, shortness of breath, chest pain, arrhythmias, allergic reactions etc.
o Check vital signs as needed
o Recognize any unusual patient condition and initiate emergency measures including, oxygen therapy, suction, CPR, defibrillation, ACLS, etc.
o Provide post procedure care to entry site to control and stop bleeding
o Apply direct digital pressure or placement of arterial closure devices.
Act as operative assistant to physician during Cardiac Catheterization and related procedures
o Has the authority to accept verbal orders from licensed practitioners for imaging procedures followinghospital policy
o Demonstrates universal precautions, infection control, and surgical aseptic technique practices
o Assist with catheter insertion, changes, removal, and proper positioning to obtain data from different areasof the heart
o Monitor intravascular/intracardiac pressure and EKG reading displayed on monitor/recorder, and report anyvariances from normal to the physician
o Set up and operate contrast injector for delivering contrast at desired flow rates
o Operate intracoronary balloon and guide wire during angioplasty procedure
o Documents contrast administration
o Assist with intracardiac/intravascular ultrasound and doppler flow studies
o Assist physicians with arterial sheath care and removal
o Dresses and flushes venous and arterial catheters, tubes, and procedural sites
Operate electronic equipment, interpret, and calculate results
o Operate PACS system for storage and instant reviewing of digital images used during procedure
o Operate cath lab monitor/recorder including surface EKG, intracardiac EKG, intravascular/intracardiacpressure, cardiac output, etc
o Operate oximeter for determination of oxygen content of blood
o Operate oxygen consumption device for cardiac output determination
o Record all pertinent facts of each procedure done in laboratories
o Assist in the storage and retrieval of patient data
Other related responsibilities
o Maintain and check function of equipment regularly, participation tin quality control and quality assurance
o Maintain inventory, order and stock lab with supplies and drugs as needed for procedures
o Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
o Other duties as necessary including answering phones, assist in scheduling for procedures and patienttransportation, assist in patient transportation for patients from ICUs as necessary
o Teaching of invasive procedures and cardiac disease to allied health students, staff, nursing, medicalstudents/staff, and physicians
o Reports equipment problems to the coordinator, may initiate corrective action and documents inconjunction with biomed
o Maintains a safe and neat working environment; handles and disposes of biohazardous trash according toestablished standards
Educational/professional responsibilities
o Assists in the development and evaluation of QA monitors to assess and ensure the delivery of qualitypatient care
o Participates in departmental meetings and in services
o Shares professional expertise with students on clinical rotations
o Assists in the orientation of new employees
o Assists in conducting formal and informal teaching programs
o Maintain expected certifications and CEUs
