The Opportunity:

The EHS Manager will lead all environmental, health, and safety initiatives for two facilities: Manhattan, KS; Taylorsville, MS. They will utilize existing procedures and their acquired knowledge to provide EHS technical support to both plants through coordination of EHS activities and programs. This role supports the implementation, execution, and maintenance of the environmental, health, and safety systems. As the EHS Manager, you will work collaboratively with the Corporate EHS team, Plant Management, Production, Maintenance, and Engineering team members and focus on various projects and initiatives within these teams. This position will provide support for EHS specialists within the network. This position will report directly to the VP of Operations and will be based at the Manhattan, KS plant location.

In addition, this role will:
  • Champion all safety initiatives for both plants, promoting a positive and strong safety culture in everything we do.
  • Manage all key safety metrics (leading and lagging) to ensure accuracy and key actions are supported for improvement.
  • Partner will production leaders to conduct Job Hazard Analysis to mitigate potential hazards within the operations.
  • Coordination and compliance with MAPS safety programs across all operational platforms and sites including the management of the Safety Manual.
  • Provides direction to ensure programs and services complied with the highest environmental, health and safety standards.

Promote MAPS reputation by delivering innovative solutions while upholding company, corporate, federal, and state regulations.

What You'll Do:

Reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations, this role is responsible for:
  • Guide environmental, health, and safety activities at the Plant.
  • Practice safe working techniques and reinforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the company.
  • Coordinate with the plant manager and the production, maintenance, and engineering departments on facility deficiencies through site audits and inspections.
  • Monitor site-specific EHS leading and lagging indicators.
  • Ensure both plants are current on all relevant environmental, health, and safety documents in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Lead environmental compliance efforts and monitor permit requirements.
  • Assist with the new employee orientation process and ensure completion of EHS training for all employees.
  • Identify training programs to meet plant needs, track training progress, and onboard plant employees with environmental responsibilities.
  • Act as an EHS subject matter expert, responding to questions from plants and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure that corporate EHS Applications are embedded in the operation and that these management practices drive the appropriate behavior.
  • Identify site-specific circumstances requiring changes to the EHS management system and enable successful implementation and sustainability at a local level.
  • Act as a mentor to other EHS specialists within the network.
  • Use data to make recommendations on changes to training programs, SOPs, JSAs, and tools to prevent accidents and educate and protect employees.
  • Coordinate with appropriate industry-related vendors and SMEs related to the EHS needs of the organization.
  • Lead incident investigations, develop corrective actions, and communicate lessons learned in a timely, effective, and thorough manner.
  • Utilizing the EHS Enterprise System (Velocity), record and analyze accident and incident records and make recommendations regarding corrective actions, emphasizing proactive intervention.
  • Ensure the findings of accident investigations, safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments are brought to the attention of leadership and others who may be affected.
  • Assist procurement in the management of onsite contractor safety.
  • Support plant leadership on capital project planning to align sustainability efforts with capital and engineering projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Recruit, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

What we need
  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related field
  • 10 years of experience in environmental health in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • 5 years of experience as a manager or leader over safety and safety teams.
  • Experience with multiple site safety leadership is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, policies, programs, PPE, environmental policies (EPA), safety engineering, accident/injury investigation procedures and operating rules, etc.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, willingness to ask, listen, and clarify prior to identifying solutions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, flexibility, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, in addition to strong computer skills.
  • Organizational, planning, and documentation skills.
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills (a go-to leader for safety)
