Job Description: As Senior Design Engineer at Schneider Electric, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing IoT solutions across our global infrastructure, with a primary focus on Edge software - specifically protocol driver development (Modbus, BACnet, and other field protocols). This position requires practical hands-on ability to design, implement, and optimize protocol driver software running on resource-constrained edge gateways and devices deployed at large scale (100s of thousands) in the field.

Job Description: As Senior Design Engineer at Schneider Electric, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing IoT solutions across our global infrastructure, with a primary focus on Edge software - specifically protocol driver development (Modbus, BACnet, and other field protocols). This position requires practical hands-on ability to design, implement, and optimize protocol driver software running on resource-constrained edge gateways and devices deployed at large scale (100s of thousands) in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop scalable, high-performance protocol driver software (Modbus, BACnet, and other field/industrial protocols) for Edge computing devices.
- Independently design and implement communication drivers in C, including serial and IP-based transport layers, ensuring efficient and reliable device communication.
- Design and implement inter-process communication (IPC) mechanisms between protocol drivers and application services for efficient data exchange.
- Work on device-level data acquisition and integration with upstream application services and edge data pipelines.
- Ensure driver software is secure, reliable, and optimized for resource-constrained and real-time edge environments.
- Apply RTOS/embedded Linux concepts to ensure deterministic behavior, efficient resource usage, and robustness of protocol drivers.
- Implement and manage Linux process management, including systemd services, resource allocation, and performance tuning for driver processes.
- Collaborate with application teams (built primarily in Python) to integrate protocol drivers into the broader Edge software stack.
- Stay updated with emerging protocol standards, embedded Linux, and edge computing technologies.
Technical
- 4-10 years of overall experience in software engineering with a strong focus on C programming in embedded/Linux environments.
- Strong proficiency in C, with solid understanding of OOPs concepts (as applied in C or C++) for structuring driver and protocol stack code.
- Good understanding of Linux fundamentals, including process/thread management, IPC mechanisms (shared memory, message queues, sockets, pipes), and systemd.
- Working knowledge of RTOS concepts (task scheduling, priorities, determinism, resource contention) as applicable to embedded/edge systems.
- Understanding of industrial/field protocols such as Modbus and/or BACnet, or strong aptitude to learn them quickly.
- Willingness and ability to learn Python, as some integration with application services (written in Python) will be required - prior Python experience is a plus but not mandatory.
- Proficiency and experience with Git or any other VCS.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to lead complex technical projects.
- Working knowledge of communication protocols UART, I2C, SPI
Good to have:
- Knowledge of Rust, C++, or Golang for performance-critical edge applications.
- Prior experience of working in IoT.
- Hands-on experience with Docker.
- Familiarity with cloud IoT platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT, Google Cloud IoT) and how edge devices integrate with them.
- Knowledge of industrial protocols (BACnet, Modbus, CAN)
- Knowledge of wireless protocols (Zigbee, BLE)
- Good Understanding of IoT architectures, protocols (MQTT, HTTP/REST), and edge computing frameworks.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain and present technical concepts to a diverse set of audiences.
- Good judgment, time management, and decision-making skills.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and thrive in a cross-functional environment.
- Willingness to work outside documented job description. Has a "whatever is needed" attitude.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Electronics, or related field.
- Working experience designing robust, scalable & maintainable driver/protocol stack software in C.
- Prior experience in building embedded or edge IoT solutions.
- Prior experience in the energy sector, building automation, or industrial automation is advantageous.
