Schneider Electric is hiring!

Description:

We are seeking a skilled and driven Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Central Engineering team. This role will focus on Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) medium voltage equipment, supporting customized solutions for complex power systems projects. The ideal candidate brings deep mechanical engineering expertise in MV GIS products and thrives in a cross-functional, collaborative environment.

What will you do?

• Collaborate closely with sales, quotations, and project management teams to define and align mechanical engineering strategies for high-impact projects.

• Review and interpret customer-supplied documents, including mechanical specifications, layout drawings, and environmental requirements, to develop accurate and optimized GIS MV solutions.

• Perform comprehensive order reviews to ensure mechanical design accuracy, compliance with specifications, and alignment with safety and quality standards.

• Create and manage mechanical engineering documentation: 3D CAD models, general arrangement drawings, piping layouts, BOMs, enclosure designs, and thermal management solutions.

• Lead the mechanical design and execution of GIS MV projects from concept through production, ensuring timely delivery and exceptional quality.

• Act as a technical liaison with plant and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product realization and resolve production-phase challenges.

• Support prototype testing, validation, and continuous improvement efforts through mechanical simulations and field feedback.

• Provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle, including installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases.

What skills will you need to be successful in this role?

• Strong understanding of GIS MV product design, gas sealing technology, dielectric clearances, and pressure vessel design principles.

• Proficiency in CAD and simulation tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, Autodesk Inventor, COMSOL, or ANSYS).

• Ability to define and implement mechanical engineering best practices in a fast-paced ETO (Engineer-to-Order) environment.

• Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate across global functions and disciplines.

• A self-motivated problem solver who thinks critically and innovatively in resolving complex mechanical challenges.

• Knowledge of industry standards such as IEC 62271, IEEE, and ANSI related to medium voltage switchgear.

• Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally.

What are the technical requirements of the role?

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's degree preferred).

• 8+ years of experience in mechanical design of medium voltage GIS or similar MV equipment.

• Deep familiarity with design constraints related to high-voltage insulation, thermal management, vibration, and structural integrity.

• Experience in integrating mechanical systems with electrical components in enclosed environments.

• Understanding of manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, enclosure fabrication, and assembly methods.

• Experience working with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, product management, manufacturing, and quality.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's degree preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical design of medium voltage GIS or similar MV equipment.
