Purpose:

Elanco is going through a transformation within its IT Organization to insource several engineering teams to deliver our solutions and data products. As the Associate Director – Data Engineering, you will be responsible for building and leading a brand-new data engineering team that will support the data and analytics needs of our business units and functions. You and your team will design, develop, and maintain scalable data products that enable data-driven decision making and insights. You will also collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to understand their data requirements and deliver solutions that meet or exceed their expectations. Finally, you will need to establish strong relationships with our chosen Data Engineering Partner(s), who will provide additional resources to augment our capacity, and oversee their work to ensure adherence to our standards and deliver high quality output.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Hire, build and manage a high-performing data engineering team that follows agile methodologies and best practices.
  • Carry out all elements of employee supervision, such as performance management, development coaching, learning plan oversight, task assignment and succession management.
  • Own the establishment of required capabilities and skills, anticipate future needs, staff to needs, and continuously work to develop people and the organization.
  • Serve as part of the Data Engineering & Platforms Leadership Team, contributing to our roadmap and strategy for data capabilities at Elanco.
  • Partner with Data Platforms Leadership and Product Owners to propose enhancements to our data platforms that accelerate delivery, improve reliability, and manage cost – in particular highlighting opportunities for automation.
  • Partner with Software Engineering leadership on our engineering models and how they deliver business needs in an aligned manner.
  • Work with our chosen Engineering Partner(s) on establishing a data engineering capability at Elanco that can deliver and scale based on demand.
  • Engage with Functional Product Managers and Product Owners to identify opportunities for data engineering and determine whether we will insource or outsource specific workloads.
  • Execute our Functional Data Engineering Strategy and Roadmap that aligns with business objectives and priorities.
  • Ensure that right-sized data quality, reliability, security, and governance activities are included throughout the lifecycle of our data products.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to data engineers and other data professionals.
  • Communicate and present the data engineering deliverables, solutions and results to your stakeholders and senior management.
  • Mentor individuals across all IT roles at our offices in Bangalore.
  • Demonstrate ownership in understanding Elanco’s strategic direction as it relates to your team and individual goals.
  • Proactively engage with the IT community (internally and externally) across multiple channels, looking to share, represent, educate and inspire.
  • Act as a technical subject matter expert on data engineering technologies and practices.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related field.
  • At least 12+ years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or data management.
  • At least 5+ years of experience in leading and managing data engineering teams.
  • Expertise in cloud-based data platforms and services, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Proficiency in SQL and one or more programming languages, such as Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Experience in building and optimizing data pipelines, data warehouses, and data lakes using tools such as Spark, Airflow, Kafka, or Hadoop
  • Knowledge of data modelling, data quality, data security, and data governance principles and practices
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Team Leadership within a consultancy organization, managing clients and overseeing project delivery.
  • Azure and/or GCP Certifications – particularly with data platforms/services.
  • Examples of building a new team and establishing its presence within an organization.
