Wheaton College is hiring a Public Safety Night Patrol Supervisor in Wheaton, IL. This is a full-time position.

Public Safety - Public Safety Night Patrol Supervisor

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief, the Night Patrol Supervisor, holding a rank of Lieutenant, is responsible for the night operations of the Patrol Unit. This is to be accomplished through the supervision of Officers and Dispatchers. All resources are to be managed to provide pro-active and protective services to the college community.

In addition, under the direction of the Chief of Public Safety, the Night Patrol Supervisor, will be responsible for updating and maintaining the Standard Operating Procedures, Co-Administration of the Public Safety (ARMS) Automated Records Management System, Updating Public Safety Clery Act and Crime incident reporting, and maintaining the Daily Crime Log and Key Indicators report. This position pays $25-$30/hour, based on experience.

Duties

1. The primary duty of the Night Supervisor is to provide leadership to the Public Safety night staff through the patrol function. He or she will normally be scheduled to work five patrol shifts per week.

2. In addition to the leadership role, the Night Supervisor will perform all patrol duties of a regular Public Safety Officer. See the Job Description for Public Safety Officer as well as the duties outlined for specific shifts listed in the S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedures.). Since Night Supervisor is performing regular patrol response duties, he will be the First Responder to campus emergencies and incidents and will assume command of significant events until a higher-ranking college official can respond.

3. Provide necessary information, resources, guidance, and direction for Public Safety Officers and Public Safety Dispatchers to effectively and efficiently perform their assigned duties.

4. The Night Patrol Supervisor will make updates and changes to the department's Standard Operating Procedures, as they become necessary and publish those updates to the department personnel.

5. The Night Patrol Supervisor will function as a Co-Administrator of the (ARMS) Automated Records Management System. Included in this is the setting up accounts and access levels for new officers, the supervision of, and approval of reports, and providing guidance to officers with the system.

6. Submit a monthly Key Indicators report to the Chief of Public Safety from data in the ARMS program.

7. Maintain the Daily Crime Log in accordance with reporting requirements.

8. Assist in updating the Clery Act reporting requirements by updating all reports of crimes reported through the Public Safety Department.

9. Assist the Chief of Public Safety and the Deputy Chief in the screening, interviewing, hiring, and training of Officers.

10. Assist the Chief of Public Safety and the Patrol Coordinator in establishing specific goals, policies and procedures for the Patrol Unit. Evaluate patrol procedures and training, submitting recommendations for changes or improvements to the Patrol Coordinator.

11. Study and report trends on the night shift related to campus incidents and Public Safety related needs. Recommend changes or improvements to the Patrol Coordinator.

12. Promote a positive spirit of service for all Public Safety personnel. Maintain high morale by providing clear instruction, direction, support and feedback.

13. Strive to promote a reputation of cooperation and service to all College departments. Assist the Patrol Coordinator with necessary follow-up and communication relating to Public Safety personnel.

14. Represent Public Safety patrol needs, including budget requirements to both the Chief and to the Patrol Coordinator. Communicate information on night activity, problems, and opportunities.

15. Serve as an example to all Public Safety personnel. Portray a professional attitude in all activities and relationships.

16. Be responsible for the effective performance of all night patrol functions and duties, including patrol, dispatch, and the campus shuttle.

17. Review, make corrections, and approve incident reports submitted by night shift personnel.

18. Ensure that exterior lighting throughout the campus is checked monthly and that all campus elevator emergency phones are tested monthly. Prepare work orders for needed repairs and make appropriate recommendations.

19. Perform other duties as assigned.

20. Participate in all department training events and department meetings.

Professional Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (BA) from four-year college or university; and one to two years related Public Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Meets all the qualifications of the Public Safety Officer position.
  • Must have a valid Illinois Driver's license.
  • Must be certified in required Control Tactics including the use of the ASP collapsible baton and be certified to carry and use OC pepper spray.
  • Have required First Aid/ AED/ CPR certification, Blood-borne Pathogen, Psychological First Aid, Clery Act reporting, and Hazardous Material Response training.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office, Automated Records Management System (ARMS), and basic user-friendly software programs.
