Job Summary:

The Weld Operator is responsible for operating welding machines to assemble and join metal components used in automotive manufacturing. This role ensures that welds meet quality standards and production requirements while maintaining safety and efficiency in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate automated, robotic, and/or manual welding equipment to join metal parts in automotive production.
  • Load and unload metal components onto welding fixtures or robotic welding stations.
  • Monitor weld quality, inspect finished parts, and perform basic troubleshooting on weld defects such as porosity, spatter, or misalignment.
  • Perform minor adjustments to welding machines and fixtures to maintain optimal performance.
  • Read and interpret work instructions, blueprints, and welding symbols to ensure compliance with production specifications.
  • Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify weld accuracy and component alignment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area while following 5S and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and quality teams to identify and resolve production issues.
  • Follow all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA guidelines when working with welding equipment and metal components.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on welding machines, including checking gas flow and replacing consumables (tips, nozzles, wire, etc.).

Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED required; welding certification (AWS or equivalent) is a plus.
  • 1+ years of experience operating welding machines in an automotive or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Basic understanding of welding processes (MIG, TIG, resistance welding, or robotic welding).
  • Ability to read blueprints, welding symbols, and work instructions.
  • Experience working with automated welding robots (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, etc.) is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with quality inspection procedures and defect identification.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in a manufacturing setting.

Work Environment:

  • Automotive manufacturing plant with exposure to heat, sparks, noise, fumes, and metalworking equipment.
  • Required to wear PPE such as welding helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots.
  • Shift work, overtime, and weekend availability may be necessary depending on production schedules.
