Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform customer-focused fieldwork, including observations, interviews, and contextual inquiries in support of an ongoing program of discrete, but potentially related, growth initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to uncover patterns, themes, and insights related to customer Jobs-To-Be-Done. Identify the relationships between customer’s work and their choice of specific solutions, including technical and purchase process aspects of the extant solution.
  • Collect and synthesize business intelligence data from available industry reports, public information, interviews, field reports, or purchased sources
  • Identify and analyze macroscopic trends with potential business strategy implications.
  • Become a subject matter expert of customer Jobs To Be Done and operating contexts that are adjacent to those performed by our current products.
  • Perform secondary research to complement primary findings and provide a comprehensive view of the market and customer landscape.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, channel partners, and other stakeholders to translate research findings into actionable recommendations for new product/market development.
  • Present research findings to senior executives and business unit partners through reports, presentations, and workshops.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline required.
  • 1-4 years of experience in new product development or a related field is essential.
  • Must have strong technical, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with good business acumen and presentation skills required.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in qualitative research methods and tools is vital.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic experience in experimental Psychology or Sociology, or other disciplines involving direct engagement with human subjects for research purposes.
  • Experience with user-centered design processes.
  • Experience in B2B or B2G sales.
  • Proven mechanical aptitude and ability to demonstrate understanding of mechanical products required experience in formulating and conducting experiments is a plus.
  • Comfort engaging with strangers in discussions about their work.
  • Able to engage in collaborative inquiry and maintain sustained, effective dialogue with stakeholders to drive for results and strategic direction.
  • Knowledge of some or all the industries in which Federal Signal operates.
  • Entrepreneurial experience (either inside or outside of a startup company); candidate must be a self-starter and be able to operate independently on tasks.
