Description:
Respiratory Therapist II
Overview
The Respiratory Therapist II provides advanced respiratory care using expanded clinical knowledge, independent decision‑making, and the evaluate‑and‑treat process. This role primarily supports critical care areas, managing complex patients and performing protocol‑driven ventilator management. Responsibilities also include patient and family education, interdisciplinary coordination, staff development, and ongoing professional growth. Care is delivered with attention to population‑specific biological, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial needs.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Teamwork
• Completes patient care, documentation, and education
• Contributes to a positive, team‑oriented environment
• Supports students, new staff, and peer
Clinical Care
• Performs comprehensive patient assessments and evaluates therapy needs
• Collaborates with the healthcare team to plan and adjust care
• Administers aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene therapy, volume expansion, oxygen, and medical gas therapy
• Manages ventilators, including weaning and waveform interpretation
• Performs airway management: intubation, extubation, trach care and changes
• Obtains and analyzes arterial blood gases
• Educates patients and mentors new employees and students
• May assist with invasive/non‑invasive procedures, cardiac services, and pulmonary diagnostics
Safety & Quality
• Ensures accurate electronic orders, documentation, and billing
• Promotes patient safety initiatives and evidence‑based practice
• Participates in performance improvement activities
• Reviews and follows updated departmental policies
General Expectations
• Performs other assigned duties
• Adheres to organizational policies and code of conduct
Qualifications
Education
• Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program (CoARC or CAAHP)
• Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy required
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
Experience
• 0–2 years clinical experience
• Minimum 6 months in critical care
Skills
• Strong communication and critical‑thinking abilities
• Ability to collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams
• Computer proficiency, including database familiarity
• Excellent customer service and assessment skills
Licenses & Certifications
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
• Respiratory Care Professional license
• Basic Life Support (BLS), including Instructor and Provisional
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), including Instructor and Provisional
