Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Director - Public Affairs and Communications to join the Corporate Public Affairs group at our global headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We are seeking entrepreneurial candidates who have a passion for supervising and leading a team, applying their knowledge and skills in communication and public affairs, and working to support GP's containerboard and cellulose manufacturing operations. This role supervises manufacturing site-based public affairs managers and provides strategic communications counsel to senior operations leaders who are directly responsible for production and operations at those sites. Responsibilities include internal communication, community relations and local government interaction, and media relations.

Our Team

Georgia-Pacific's Packaging & Cellulose business offers a full range of product options from high-end graphic packaging to cellulose fluff pulp to bulk bins - all with a goal of becoming a preferred partner to customers. The manufacturing locations that make the containerboard and cellulose products are based in communities in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Oregon and Virginia. What You Will Do

  • Supervise a team of manufacturing site-based public affairs managers, including supporting them in growing their knowledge and skills and helping them contribute to their site's priorities and success, including managing GP's reputation as a good community partner.
  • Consult, counsel and align with senior operations leaders and manufacturing site managers on strategic communications and engagement with all employees.
  • Help build communication capability with operations leaders and supervisors so that they are better able to deliver on business vision and priorities.
  • Partner with senior operations leaders and manufacturing site teams to ensure optimal relationships with key community stakeholders for each manufacturing site and partner with the Koch Government affairs team to manage relationships with state and federal stakeholders. This includes elected officials, community leaders, business and philanthropic organizations and media.
  • Collaborate with communication team members who support the commercial business team, as well as proactively knowledge share with the corporate communications team and other site-based communications team members who support other Georgia-Pacific operations.


Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or related field with 10+ years of public affairs and communications experience.
  • Experience supervising others.
  • Demonstrated experience with support/counsel of senior company leadership.
  • Experience interacting with elected officials, local economic development groups, school districts, advisory panels, community groups, etc.
  • Experience developing and implementing a communication strategy or a communication plan, including adapting and implementing best practices from other communications programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Position may require up to 30-40% travel.


What Will Put You Ahead

  • Direct experience supporting manufacturing/operations either at a manufacturing site or supporting senior operations leaders.
  • Experience communicating with employees who do not sit at a computer.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) writing style.
  • Experience in various Microsoft tools including Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook and SharePoint
