Job Summary

The Sr AI Solution Architect is a senior individual contributor responsible for designing secure, scalable, and compliant AI systems across TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Reporting to the Dir, Enterprise AI & Automation, this role sits at the intersection of software architecture and cybersecurity, translating complex healthcare and federal contracting business needs into technical blueprints that can be built, audited, and scaled. The Sr AI Solution Architect selects appropriate models and tools, designs secure data pipelines, and ensures all solutions meet HIPAA, FedRAMP, and NIST compliance requirements, while partnering with technical leads on existing enterprise systems to define how AI and automation capabilities will integrate into TriWest's current infrastructure.

Technical decisions at this level carry material compliance and patient data consequences. This role designs agentic AI frameworks, RAG pipelines, and high-throughput inference architectures that must scale to millions of member claims without performance degradation or compliance exposure. The Sr AI Solution Architect provides design review and technical guidance on solutions produced by consulting engineers, ensuring alignment with TriWest's architectural standards and security guardrails within the governance structure led by the Director of AI and Automation and the AI Governance Committee.

Education & Experience

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience
• U.S. Citizen
• Must be able to receive a favorable interim and adjudicated final Department of Defense (DoD) background investigation
• 8 or more years of experience in Software Architecture or Systems Engineering with a focus on enterprise-grade healthcare platforms
• 5 or more years specifically focused on AI/ML architectures, cloud services such as AWS Bedrock or Azure OpenAI, and complex data engineering
• Proven track record designing high-availability systems that handle sensitive healthcare data including PHI and PII while maintaining strict compliance with NIST and FedRAMP standards
• Deep experience designing and implementing RAG architectures, vector databases, API gateways, and cloud inference endpoints
• Demonstrated expertise in Privacy by Design architecture and automated PHI de-identification workflows
• Experience developing agentic AI frameworks capable of multi-step reasoning, tool use, and self-correction in a production environment
• Strong knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards including FHIR and HL7

Preferred:

• Experience in a federal healthcare contracting environment such as VA or DoD programs
• AWS or Azure AI/ML certification
• Familiarity with FedRAMP authorization processes
• Experience with contact center AI platforms such as Google CCAI or Amazon Connect

Key Responsibilities

• Architect end-to-end AI solutions, selecting optimal tools and models for specific healthcare use cases - including Gemini for summarization, AWS versus Salesforce for contact center AI, and SLMs versus LLMs for clinical versus general reasoning tasks. Ensuring cost, performance, and compliance optimization at each decision point.
• Partner directly with the CISO office to define and implement security guardrails for all AI tools, including encryption standards, data residency controls, and access control architectures that meet HIPAA and FedRAMP requirements.
• Design and manage the AI infrastructure stack, including vector databases, API gateways, and cloud inference endpoints within AWS and Azure environments, ensuring high availability and performance at enterprise scale.
• Establish coding standards, architectural patterns, and best practices for the engineering team to ensure long-term maintainability, security, and scalability of all AI systems built at TriWest.
• Lead the design of high-fidelity RAG architectures, focusing on advanced chunking strategies and semantic search optimization to minimize hallucinations in medical and operational summaries.

• Design Privacy by Design architectures that automate the de-identification of PHI before it enters AI processing layers, ensuring every solution is compliant by default rather than by audit.
• Develop foundational blueprints for autonomous agentic AI frameworks capable of multi-step reasoning, tool use, and self-correction within TriWest's healthcare and federal contracting environment.
• Engineer high-throughput inference architectures to ensure AI-driven automation scales across millions of member claims without performance degradation or latency failures.
• Ensure all AI blueprints align with FHIR and HL7 interoperability standards to allow seamless data exchange between AI agents and TriWest's core clinical and operational systems.
• Architect automated logging and audit trails for all AI-generated outputs to meet FedRAMP and HIPAA reporting requirements, providing the compliance infrastructure for governance reporting.
• Provide technical review and guidance on solution designs produced by consulting engineers, ensuring alignment with TriWest's architectural standards before development begins.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Competencies

Communication / People Skills: Translates highly complex AI architectural concepts into clear technical documentation for engineering teams and into business-relevant terms for executive and compliance stakeholders. Engages credibly with the CISO office, clinical operations leadership, and federal compliance reviewers simultaneously, adapting depth and framing for each audience.

Computer Literacy: Ability to function in a multi-system Microsoft environment using Word, Outlook, TriWest Intranet, the Internet, and department software applications.

Coping / Flexibility: Operates at the frontier of AI technology in a regulated environment where both the technology and the compliance landscape evolve rapidly. Maintains architectural discipline and security standards even when business stakeholders press for faster delivery timelines than the compliance requirements allow.

Creativity / Innovation: Designs novel AI architectures tailored to TriWest's unique intersection of healthcare operations and federal contracting requirements, where off-the-shelf solutions are rarely sufficient. Evaluates emerging AI tools, models, and infrastructure patterns continuously to ensure TriWest's technical stack remains current without introducing unnecessary risk.

Independent Thinking / Self-Initiative: Operates as a senior technical resource for AI solution design with significant latitude for independent decision-making within the governance structure. Proactively identifies architectural risks, infrastructure gaps, and compliance vulnerabilities before they become production issues, and develops mitigation strategies without waiting for direction.

Information Management: Manages large volumes of complex technical, security, and compliance information across multiple concurrent AI solution designs. Produces and maintains architectural documentation, design decision records, and compliance audit trails with the precision required for FedRAMP and federal contracting oversight.

High Intensity Environment: Performs effectively under the sustained pressure of high-visibility AI architecture decisions with direct compliance, financial, and patient data consequences. Maintains technical precision and regulatory awareness when timelines are compressed and stakeholder expectations are high.

Multi-Tasking / Time Management: Balances solution design, infrastructure management, security reviews, standards development, and engineering oversight across multiple concurrent AI initiatives, managing competing technical demands without compromising the security or compliance integrity of any solution.

Organizational Skills: Manages multiple concurrent AI solution architecture engagements at different stages of design, review, and compliance validation. Maintains architectural documentation, standards libraries, and infrastructure designs with the rigor required for enterprise governance and federal audit readiness.

Problem Solving / Analysis: Applies systematic architectural analysis to highly complex, multi-system AI integration challenges where there is no established precedent. Evaluates competing technical approaches against compliance requirements, cost constraints, and performance targets, producing defensible architectural decisions that engineering teams can build from and auditors can review.

Team-Building / Team Player: Provides technical leadership and design guidance to consulting engineers and the Sr. Process & AI Business Analyst, creating a collaborative design environment where architectural standards are clear and decisions are made transparently. Builds credibility with existing technical leads across the enterprise whose systems must integrate with new AI capabilities.

Technical Skills: Expert-level knowledge of AI/ML architecture including large language models, small language models, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic frameworks, and cloud AI services across AWS Bedrock and Azure OpenAI. Deep proficiency in designing secure data pipelines, vector databases, API gateways, and Privacy by Design architectures within HIPAA, FedRAMP, and NIST-compliant environments. Demonstrated ability to make technically sound, independently defensible architectural decisions that balance performance, security, cost, and long-term maintainability.
