Description:

Nemours Children's Hospital Therapeutic and Rehab Services and ENT Departments are looking for an experienced Speech Language Pathologist Lead that is dedicated to the care and treatment of children within an Auditory-Verbal Therapy program. This lead therapist will provide clinical expertise in treating this patient population while also participating in mentorship, education and research to continue to develop our Cochlear Implant Program in the Nemours Children's Ear and Hearing and Communication Center.

Primary Functions:
  • Lead the auditory verbal therapy program, support the growth and advancement of the Nemours Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant Program and the Nemours Children's Ear Hearing and Communication Center (NEHCC).
  • Participate in the design, developments, and implementation of clinical protocols that implement best practices.
  • Participate in the design, development and implementation of research protocols which examine and facilitate best language development outcomes.
  • Provide instructional expertise for divisional colleagues, allied health and medical trainees, and community clinical and education professionals, participating in lectures, workshops and in-service design and delivery.

Essential Functions:
  • Direct Patient Care Responsibilities (60%)
    • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients of both pediatrics and adolescents with hearing loss; completes at least 75% of Level I Speech-Language clinical competencies.
    • Performs pre- and post- operative speech and language evaluations and re-evaluation of children with hearing loss that are obtaining or utilize hearing technologies.
    • Provides speech-language pathology treatment with emphasis in Listening and Spoken Language therapy for children with permanent hearing loss who utilize cochlear implant(s), hearing aid(s), or bone conduction hearing device(s).
    • Provides care using a family-centered approach that empowers parents to become their child's primary teacher, educating families and providing home programs as necessary.
    • Demonstrates familiarity with a variety of hearing devices and ability to troubleshoot and manage referral of outside provider for repairs.
  • Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities (40%)
    • Participate in multi-disciplinary management team for children with complex hearing loss needs, and managing children with hearing aids, BAHAs, and cochlear implants.
    • Ability to develop appropriate, measurable treatment goals targeting listening and spoken language development based on evaluation; ability to measure progress against goals and to modify treatment plans according to patient progress .
    • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow effective working relationships with a diverse patient, colleague, and vendor population. Detail oriented, flexible, and able to organize time and prioritize various duties.
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude. Experience with building community engagement and/or advocacy on behalf of patients with speech and communication challenges.
    • A strong commitment to advancing Nemours' mission and values.
    • Mentorship of the other SLP's in Therapy and Rehab services who will be treating children in the Nemours Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant Program and the Nemours Children's Ear Hearing and Communication Center (NEHCC).

  • Job Requirements
    • Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology required.
    • 5 years minimum experience in treating patients with hearing loss required.
    • Florida State License to practice Speech Language Pathology required.
    • American Heart Association BLS Certification (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) required upon hire.
    • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence required.
    • Member of professional specialty organizations (ASHA, FLASHA) preferred.
    • Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT) preferred, those near completion of certification will be considered. An intent to complete certification in near future is required.
