GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Senior Manager of Airport Safety, this position is responsible for assisting with regulatory inspections of both Movement and Non-movement areas, ensuring compliance with safety regulations under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 139. This role involves monitoring hazard reporting systems, maintaining training records and SMS communications, and assisting in safety meetings and training initiatives to promote a culture of safety. The SMS Specialist assists in risk management assessments, maintains records of safety investigations, and promotes SMS objectives across TPA.

Tampa International Airport is a 24/7/365 team operation. Employees may be required to work extended hours, alternative shifts (including nights, weekends, and holidays), or in response to staffing challenges, weather conditions, or emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Track and trend reported hazards using the TPA Safety Management System (SMS).

Track and trend vehicle and facility damage incidents to ensure proper mitigation measures are in place.

Attend stakeholder safety meetings with Senior Manager of Airport Safety to address safety concerns and ensure compliance.

Participate in Safety Management System Committee meetings to address safety risks and improvements.

Assist with safety audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with HCAA SMS.

Identify risk controls and suggest mitigation strategies for issues identified during risk assessments.

Assist with incident analysis to determine root causes.

Monitor and enforce safety infractions, ensuring accountability and adherence to safety policies.

Assist in investigating safety hazards and incidents, providing accurate record retention.

Support the development and implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) within TPA.

Perform other duties as required or requested to maintain and improve safety standards at TPA.

Work with cross-functional teams to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive safety strategy.

Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position.

REQUIRED FOR ALL HCAA JOBS

  • In the event of an emergency or disaster that impacts the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department or the HCAA Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Such assignments may be before, during, or after the emergency/disaster.
  • Complies with all HCAA Policies, Procedures, and Standards.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS)

· Associate’s Degree or Certifications in Safety Engineering, Industrial or Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.

· Two Years of professional experience in a safety or operational role across any industry or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

· Or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

· Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Experience in safety management within an airport or industrial setting is preferred but not required.

· Safety Management System (SMS) experience.

· Knowledge of FAA regulations, specifically FAA Part 139.

·

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related safety, specifically within the aviation industry.

Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and safety auditing processes.

Ability to track and trend safety data, identifying hazards.

Skills in risk assessments and incident analysis.

Ability to develop safety training programs to various stakeholders and levels of TPA staff.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to provide clear and concise reports.

Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure comprehensive safety protocols.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, airport personnel, and external stakeholders.

Ability to provide outstanding customer service while maintaining professionalism and courtesy.
