Description:

Under the general direction of the Finance Department leadership team, the Finance Department Intern supports the day-to-day financial operations of the Authority while gaining hands-on experience in government finance and accounting. This position assists with financial reporting, budgeting support, data analysis, and compliance-related activities that help ensure the responsible stewardship of public resources. The role provides exposure to core public-sector financial processes, promotes the development of analytical and technical skills, and offers practical experience working with real-world financial data in a professional environment. This is an opportunity for undergraduate Finance or Accounting students to apply classroom knowledge, build foundational skills, and contribute to the Authority’s mission of transparency, accountability, and service to the community.

COMPENSATION: $25/ hr

ANTICIPATED START DATE: May 2026 (End of Spring Semester)


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with monthly financial reporting by preparing schedules, basic reconciliations, and variance support

  • Support the budgeting and forecasting process, including data collection, trend analysis, and documentation

  • Help maintain the general ledger by assisting with journal entry support and account reconciliations

  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including invoice review, coding, and payment tracking

  • Support cash management and treasury functions, including monitoring balances and preparing summary reports

  • Provides comprehensive support for the Financial Planning and Financial Operations teams to carry out additional responsibilities and special projects as assigned.

  • Conducts forecast variance analysis and communicate variance drivers to finance leadership.

  • Support cash management and treasury activities, including monitoring cash balances, assisting with bank reconciliations, and performing other bank-related tasks.

  • Perform financial and data analysis to support department operations and management decision-making.

  • Generates insights from financial analyses, interprets data, and communicates key takeaways.

  • Help prepare ad hoc reports, dashboards, and presentations for leadership and internal stakeholders

  • Support process improvement initiatives by identifying efficiencies and helping implement best practices

  • Prepare journal entries and posts transactions, including fund transfers across departments and cost centers.

  • Collaborate with finance staff and other departments to understand public-sector financial processes

  • Assist other Authority departments with forecasting and budget initiatives by supporting data collection, analysis, and documentation

  • Supports key business initiatives with analytical and modeling assistance.

  • Manages the Authority’s SkyCenter common-area maintenance calculation and supports Commercial Real Estate Profit & Loss statements.

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position.

REQUIRED FOR ALL HCAA JOBS

  • In the event of an emergency or disaster that impacts the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department or the HCAA Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Such assignments may be before, during, or after the emergency/disaster.
  • Complies with all HCAA Policies, Standard Procedures, Rules and Regulations, and Operating Directives.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS)

  • Pursuit of bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), enterprise business suite software, and the Microsoft suite of software products.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of budgetary procedures and controls.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and evaluate data and to develop logical conclusions.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others within and outside the Authority.
  • Ability to handle restricted, sensitive, and confidential information.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service, serve the public, and represent the Authority with courtesy and professionalism.
