Position Description

The Gas Measurement Analyst works with upstream and downstream business groups to ensure accurate and timely transfer of measurement data used for billing, regulatory compliance, and operational decision-making. This role performs volume processing, balancing, and data integrity tasks critical to the Measurement Department and the corporation.
The analyst uses the company's measurement data management systems to investigate anomalies, identify trends, and resolve discrepancies among measured volumes, field conditions, and operational events. This position requires strong analytical ability, technical proficiency with data tools, and an understanding of natural gas measurement equipment and processes.
Successful candidates demonstrate curiosity, a strong drive for continuous learning and improvement, and the ability to connect data trends with real-world physical events occurring at measurement stations.
Primary Purpose:
  • Monitor, validate, and analyze natural gas measurement data across assigned pipeline systems
  • Ensure accuracy, integrity, and traceability of custody transfer measurement data
  • Participate in investigation and reconciliation of measurement discrepancies, including Lost & Unaccounted (L& U) gas analysis
  • Support the goals and initiatives of the Measurement Department and the corporation through quality work product and cross-functional collaboration
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Measurement Data Analysis
  • Monitor daily natural gas measurement volumes and quality data across assigned pipeline system
  • Validate custody transfer measurement data to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to settlement and billing cycles
  • Identify anomalies, trends, or discrepancies in measurement data and perform root cause analysis
  • Correlate measurement data behavior with operational events such as maintenance activities, equipment changes, flow disruptions, or communication failures
  • Analyze measurement comparison reports and investigate discrepancies outside defined tolerances
  • Process measurement volume adjustments utilizing pipeline tariffs, general terms and conditions, and contracts
  • Participate in Lost & Unaccounted (L& U) investigations on company-owned assets
Systems and Data Management
  • Utilize the company's measurement data management systems to review, validate, and reconcile measurement records
  • Extract and analyze data using SQL queries, Excel, and other analytical tools
  • Complete and assist with point requests and point setup in measurement and accounting systems
  • Provide timely response to measurement data inquiries and data reports per requests from internal and external customers
  • Support data integrity through quality checks, exception reporting, and audit review processes
  • Assist with system development, enhancements, system testing, documentation, and training
Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Collaborate with field measurement technicians and engineering personnel to investigate data anomalies
  • Work with downstream business groups and third-party interconnecting companies regarding exchange of measurement data
  • Initiate, track, and finalize requests for measurement adjustments from third-party companies
  • Work with Measurement Manager and Supervisor to develop project plans, set goals, tactics, and timelines
  • Share technical and procedural knowledge and help train other team members as required
Compliance and Documentation
  • Acquire and maintain working knowledge of applicable industry standards and guidelines (AGA, GPA, SOX, NAESB, BLM)
  • Ensure measurement processes comply with company standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices
  • Maintain documentation related to measurement data corrections, investigations, and audit trails
  • Support internal and external audits related to measurement accuracy and data management
  • Routinely produce grammatically correct reports, summaries, policies, procedures, and memos
  • Organize, schedule, and conduct meetings as required; accurately document meeting notes and action items
Safety
  • Place priority on safety by attending safety meetings and acquiring knowledge of safety guidelines and goals
  • Work to ensure department and corporate safety guidelines are followed
  • Notify management of immediate and potential problems affecting the quality and timeliness of measurement data

Position Requirements

Technical Skills
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools
  • Working knowledge of SQL for querying and analyzing structured datasets
  • Ability to interpret large datasets and identify patterns, anomalies, and trends
  • Familiarity with measurement data management systems or SCADA systems preferred
  • Understanding of natural gas measurement principles:
    • Custody transfer measurement concepts
    • Flow computers and EFMs
    • Gas chromatographs
    • Pressure and temperature correction
    • AGA standards (preferred)
Analytical and Problem-Solving
  • Ability to link data trends with physical events in the field such as maintenance, meter changes, or operational adjustments
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
  • Ability to evaluate data quality and identify potential measurement errors
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
Communication and Collaboration
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical findings to both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills
  • Ability to translate complex data insights into actionable information for field and operational teams
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a technical field OR 2+ years' experience in natural gas measurement, energy data analysis, pipeline operations, or a related technical field
  • Proficiency with Excel-based analysis and SQL querying
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Mathematics, Data Analytics, or related technical field
  • Experience working with natural gas pipeline measurement systems
  • Knowledge of AGA gas measurement standards
  • Experience with measurement data management systems, SCADA systems, or flow computer data
  • Familiarity with pipeline operations and custody transfer measurement

Working Conditions:
  • Office environment
  • Occasional travel to field locations may be required therefore you must posses and maintain a valid driver's license and have and continue to have a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers
  • Extended hours may be necessary during month-end close or special projects

The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

Pay range is $66, 900 - $93, 700 per year. This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill sets.
