Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Denver, CO

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 6/1/2026 (Preference will be given to applications received before 4/17/2026)
  • End Date: 9/18/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 450-hour, 16 weeks

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.

STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals for an exciting new opportunity as a NPS HPTC Build Up Engineering Intern. The intern will be a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides architectural and engineering support services for National Parks throughout the Intermountain Region, including 85 total parks in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona. The interdisciplinary team is responsible for supporting these parks in the management, maintenance, repair and construction of park facilities, including buildings, utilities, trails, roads and other physical assets. The role of the intern is to support regional Project Managers (architects and engineers). The intern will have access to multiple mentors, including Architect/Project Managers (PMs) experienced in Revit and AutoCAD, the regional Compliance Specialist/Historian, and regional Facility Design Program Managers. The role of the intern is to support regional Project Managers (architects and engineers). Specific responsibilities include project scoping, preliminary and final design, CADD support, and services during construction.

Description of Duties:

  • Structural engineering design, preliminary and/or final
  • Project scoping
  • Preparation of construction drawings utilizing Revit or AutoCAD
  • Construction support, including shop drawing review and responses to Requests for Information

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Ability to commit to a 16-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
  • Driver’s License & personal transportation will be required to report to job site
  • Enrolled in Engineering School (minimum of 3 years of undergraduate work completed) seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration on Structures or Architectural Engineering
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • Coursework experience with structural steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time Monday through Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • On-the-job-training in design software and drafting software as needed to complete project assignments.
  • Multiple Trades workshop opportunities provided by HPTC.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
