The Transportation Technician performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of City transportation and traffic facilities; signs and roadway markings, traffic operations and control devices; stormwater management facilities; water distribution and wastewater collection facilities; landscaping and natural areas; and related infrastructure and equipment. Executes duties based on established plans and in response to changing priorities and emergencies. Operates light to heavy equipment and specialty tools in the performance of duties.
Transportation Trainee: This is an entry level position, and the employee is expected to assist and learn the foundational knowledge in roadway and transportation infrastructure maintenance and operations. Trainee receives Commercial Driver's License training and is required to obtain license within 12 months from hire date.
Transportation Tech I: This is an entry level position, and the employee is expected to assist and learn the foundational knowledge in roadway and or utility infrastructure maintenance and operations. Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
Transportation Tech II: This position is intermediate level, and employees generally have related experience and perform routine and less complex duties as more experienced is gained. Commercial Driver's License is required.
Operator: This position is skilled/experienced employees and can perform complex duties and repairs and can perform the full array of duties within the role. Proficiently operates and maintains a variety of equipment and trains others on its safe and effective use.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATAIONS: TRANSPORTATION TRAINEE: TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent. Must have Flagger certification and CDL or have the ability to obtain both within 12 months of hire.
EXPERIENCE: Little to basic experience with maintenance, equipment operation, construction, plumbing, or a related field desired.
TRANSPORTATION TECHNICIAN I: TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent. Must either Flagger certification and CDL, or the ability to obtain both within 6 months of hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Proficiency with Backhoe, Grader, Loader, Vacuum Truck, and CCTV Truck; Traffic Control Technician (TCT); IMSA Sign/Pavement Marking Tech I Certification; Erosion Control Certification; Basic Utilities Locating; Basic Water Meter Knowledge; Basic Backflow Certification.
EXPERIENCE: One year experience required for Technician. Previous outside experience will count toward criteria to advance to higher levels, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Assist in/Perform transportation Maintenance activities:
- Asphalt patching and pothole repair,
- Street sweeping, trash, debris, and tree limb removal,
- Right-of-way structure repair, alley grading and maintenance.
- Traffic Operations Maintenance:
- Install traffic signs and roadway markings per MUTC specifications.
- In coordination with Engineering conduct traffic studies, radar, and traffic counts.
- Install and maintain electronic traffic control devices (includes programming per NASTO, MUTC specifications).Traffic Control set up and flagging operations.
- Operator: Fabricate and assemble signage or roadway markings,
- Operator: Aide Engineering and Enforcement efforts in analysis of conditions, crash reports and etc.
- Stormwater Infrastructure Maintenance:
- Cleaning of roadside ditches, drainage ways, detention basins, stormwater inlets and trash racks.
- Vegetation removal/maintenance in drainageways including trees, shrubs, and debris to ensure safe and proper water flow.
- Operator: Assist in or perform grade analysis of channels. Dig, reform, or excavate storm channels as designed.
- Snow & Ice Mitigation: Drives tandem and single axel dump trucks equipped with front plow, granular spreader hopper, and/or liquid spray applicator to safely clear snow from city streets and rights-of-way and applying material in an efficient manner along pre-determined plow routes. May perform routine maintenance on equipment.
- Performs utility locates and reports in GIS as discrepancies or changes occur.
- Maintain a variety of records relating to inspection, preventative schedules, maintenance and work activities.
- Perform graffiti removal
- Provide miscellaneous assistance with City events and programs.
- Perform/assist skilled workers in a variety of light and heavy construction tasks; may be performed in trenches and or confined spaces. May operate more complex equipment in conjunction with training for possible promotion.
- Works irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and/or emergencies as required to respond to storm events, damage to transportation facilities, water and wastewater main breaks, and other Public Works emergencies. Participate in on-call rotation for Public Works emergencies
- Perform related work as required and assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: - Ability to obtain a CDL license within 6 or 12 months of hire including a safe driving record. Time dependent on qualifications.
- Operators must possess a current CDL license.
