Description:

The Open Space Seasonal Worker will maintain, enhance, and preserve the beautiful Open Spaces of Lafayette, Colorado. A seasonal Open Space Maintenance Technician performs a variety of semi-skilled manual labor to maintain City open space properties and other sites under City obligation. Duties are performed outdoors and include trail management, facility maintenance, noxious weed control, habitat improvement and more.

This seasonal position will be offered up to 40 hours per week with an estimated season of May-August. Shorter summer season available for students.

Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of maintaining plant species including mowing, cutting, planting, watering, pruning, and general care for plants, trees, shrubs and flowers. General understanding of maintenance of grounds keeping equipment; basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures. An interest in native and invasive flora and fauna is desirable
SKILL: Competent use of equipment such as weed trimmers, tractors, chainsaws, drills, and miscellaneous hand tools.
ABILITY: Capability to perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance tasks with minimal supervision; willingness to perform tasks outdoors in a variety of climate conditions; to perform physical tasks required of assignments; to understand and carry out oral and written assignments; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees and the public.
TRAINING: High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: One-year open space, grounds maintenance, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Assist in maintaining a variety of open space sites and facilities using hand tools, power tools and varying vehicles.
  • Assist in Wildlife Plan implementation through caretaking of recent and existing restoration sites and planting establishment.
  • Assist with youth and volunteer project implementation.
  • Provide support with Boulder County Youth Corps.
  • Trail maintenance including edge mowing and trimming.
  • Trash, debris, and litter removal.
  • Tree, brush, and limb removal using chainsaws.
  • Removing noxious plant species manually, mechanically and with biocontrol.
  • Improve habitat value by planting and maintaining native shrubs and forbs.
  • Assist in constructing and maintaining open space facilities and improvements such as trails, signs, and fences.
  • Cleaning and repairing equipment and facilities including painting, carpentry, and basic repair, as necessary.
  • Operate a variety of equipment to facilitate the management of open space properties such as light vehicles, heavy equipment, and power equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
