Description:

The Recreation Coordinator for the Senior Center is responsible for the organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of recreation programs for older adults. Acts as the Senior Services Supervisor in their absence and has both a program coordination and facility management function.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE: Proficient to expert level of knowledge in the provision of services and coordination of programs for older adults; working knowledge of Senior Center activities, service provision, and operation. Knowledge of and ability to apply basic analytical, math, and accounting skills. Working knowledge of computers and modern office practices and procedures; proficient knowledge of word processing and various software packages related to the provision of services.

SKILLS: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in order to effectively communicate with and establish good working relationships with subordinates, coworkers, public officials, citizens and other governmental or quasi-public entities. Problem solving skills in order to analyze complex problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.

ABILITIES: Comprehend, develop, and articulate conceptual ideas or strategies and implement such ideas or strategies. Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities; work under and adhere to deadlines, even under stressful or difficult situations. Effectively foster relationships with the public and handle stressful situations; manage projects by developing project objectives, methodology, deadlines, and evaluation mechanisms. Interact with a broad range of people to effectively accomplish assigned tasks or projects; follow both verbal and written instructions, and the ability to issue clear and concise verbal and/or written instructions to consumers, contractors, volunteers and other employees and report operations verbally or in written form. Physically able to operate a variety of computer and office equipment as well as work with medical and program equipment successfully in order to fulfill the essential functions of this position.

TRAINING: Bachelor's degree in Recreation or in related field with an emphasis on older adults.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional, technical experience directly in field. Experience must include working with the older adult population, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

May be required to operate a City vehicle and 15 passenger bus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Develops, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates all adult recreation programming offered by Senior Services.
  • Contracts with external people and organizations to provide additional program opportunities.
  • Develops and implements drop-in programs, general interest programs of all types, fitness and wellness, trips, and special events.
  • Oversees and coordinates the daily schedule of the Senior Center.
  • Oversee the Front Desk operation of the Senior Center including customer service, program registration, and cash handling procedures.
  • Provides direct supervision to Regular Part Time and Part Time staff through recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluating.
  • Responsible for coordinating volunteer efforts in the Senior Center through recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and recognition.
  • Provides oversight for the usage of Senior Center by overseeing the building schedule for programs, services, resources, and rentals.
  • Coordinates the building rental program including assigning staff and the reviewing and approving application for rental of space.
  • Maintains the Senior Center website pages, including updating information to maintain current and accurate content.
  • Monitors the use and care of the 15-passenger bus used by Senior Center.
  • Maintains fiscally-responsible operations through budget development, pricing programs in compliance with current cost recovery model, managing PT salary schedules within allocated expense, and planning program and facility supply purchases.
  • Assist with development of Senior Services budget as it relates to programs and facility operations.
  • Develops and oversees excursions/trips for the Center and works in partnership with other Cities for this purpose.
  • Collaborates with Senior Resource Coordinator to offer diverse education programs relevant to older adults in Lafayette.
  • Network with Senior Center operations in Boulder County and throughout Colorado through the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association.
  • Plans and develops the Older Adult section of the Recreation Activity Guide three times yearly.
  • Responsible for the RecTrac content for older adult programs and facilities including entering program content for registration purposes, maintaining facility availability, and managing WebTrac content.
  • Designs and adapts programs to meet the needs of older adults in Lafayette.
  • Works a flexible schedule to support Senior Center operating needs, programs, and trips.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
