The Irrigation Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of irrigation systems at the Indian Peaks Golf Course. Responsibilities include diagnosing and correcting system malfunctions, programming and operating central control systems, maintaining related records, and supporting general landscape maintenance activities as needed. Higher levels of this classification require increased technical proficiency, certification, and leadership capability.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: IRRIGATION TECHINICIAN I: KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of tools, methods, techniques and materials used in irrigation systems; basic electricity, water hydraulics, solid state controllers, computers, automatic valves, weather stations, various types of pumps and pumping stations. Limited knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science, propagation, and maintenance practices for turf and ornamentals. Understanding of safety practices and procedures.
SKILL: Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools and other tools commonly used in irrigation and grounds maintenance work; operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
ABILITY: Communicate effectively; maintain records; follow oral or written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, and other agencies. Perform tasks outdoors in a variety of climate conditions. Ability to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
TRAINING: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Technical training course through an industry-recognized organization preferred.
Must be able to obtain the following certifications within one (1) year of employment:
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Defensive Driving
- Trenching/Shoring/Confined Space Certification
(Requirement for training within the first 12 months of new hire will be contingent upon availability of training).
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in irrigation repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
To be eligible for promotion through the maintenance technician series, employees will need an acceptable rating on their yearly performance appraisal.
IRRIGATION TECHINICIAN II: KNOWLEDGE: Proficient knowledge of tools, methods, techniques and materials used in irrigation systems; basic electricity, water hydraulics, solid state controllers, computers, automatic valves, weather stations, various types of pumps and pumping stations. Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science, propagation, and maintenance practices for turf and ornamentals. Proficient with tools and materials used in irrigation, maintenance, and landscaping. Understanding of safety practices and procedures.
SKILL: Proficient in the use of a variety of hand and power tools. Skill in operating a wide range of equipment, including light to heavy equipment and various types of trucks. Ability to troubleshoot and perform semi-skilled irrigation and maintenance tasks.
ABILITY: Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in construction, irrigation repair, and lawn/landscape maintenance. Work independently and take initiative within established procedures. Operate equipment safely and effectively. Perform physical tasks required of assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written assignments. Serve as a technical resource for peers, train or mentor other staff. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees and the public. Perform tasks outdoors in a variety of climate conditions. Ability to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in a related field preferred.
Must obtain and maintain certification requirements of Irrigation Technician I. Must obtain the following certifications and maintain them to be eligible to become a Parks Irrigation Technician II:
- Storm Water Training
- Irrigation Association Certified Irrigation Technician course and exam.
- Completion of iQ4 expert training course.
- Completion of Decoder Technician Rain Bird Factory Trained Class.
- Completion of Valve Technician Rain Bird Factory Trained Class.
EXPERIENCE: 18 months as an Irrigation Technician I with the City; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
IRRIGATION TECHINICIAN III: KNOWLEDGE: Advanced knowledge of tools, methods, techniques and materials used in irrigation systems; basic electricity, water hydraulics, solid state controllers, computers, automatic valves, weather stations, various types of pumps and pumping stations. Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science, propagation, and maintenance practices for turf and ornamentals.
SKILL: High proficiency in operating and maintaining specialized equipment. Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills related to irrigation systems and equipment. Ability to execute tasks to a high standard with minimal oversight.
ABILITY: Interpret technical plans and specifications and apply them to work assignments. Work independently and manage complex tasks within established guidelines and timelines. Serve as a technical resource for peers, train or mentor other staff. Maintain clear, accurate maintenance records and follow safety protocols. Communicate effectively and professionally with internal teams, contractors and the public. Perform tasks outdoors in a variety of climate conditions. Ability to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in a related field preferred.
Must obtain and maintain certification requirements of Irrigation Technician I-II. Must obtain the following certifications and maintain them to be eligible to become a Parks Irrigation Technician III:
- Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor OR Certified Irrigation Designer-
- Landscape through the Irrigation Association.
- Irrigation Systems Hydraulics Expert Rain Bird Academy Class.
- Backflow Certification.
EXPERIENCE: Must have a minimum of 2 years' experience in irrigation maintenance or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the incumbent possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job at this level.
Consideration may be given for other certifications or a degree in related field and may substitute for training requirements above.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Install, inspect, diagnose, maintain, repair irrigation systems including rotary pop-ups, valves, swing joints, PVC pipe and fittings, mechanical joints, electrical and low voltage wiring, thrust blocks, grounding grids, field controllers, central computer, communication cables, relief valves, quick couplers, and a VFD pumping station.
- Repair sprinklers, valves, pumps, mainline breaks, lateral breaks; change out nozzles, diaphragms, wiring, circuit boards, transformers, solenoids, valves; install irrigation lines, sprinklers, lightning protection, control switches
- Operate and program central control systems; perform ground fault locating, ohms testing; and system diagnostics.
- Perform basic troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components.
- Regularly check and adjust irrigation system settings and water schedule performance; conduct routine inspections to assess performance and ensure optimal efficiency in the field.
- Manage account funds, logbooks, records; provide periodical reports.
- Maintain inventory, order supplies, and ensure proper care and use of tools, parts, and materials.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, water use, parts usage, and control system updates.
- Oversee the work of personnel assigned to the area.
- Support seasonal turf care activities, including fertilization, aeration, mowing, trimming, and planting as assigned.
- Perform snow removal duties by hand or utilizing equipment to clear sidewalks, walkways and parking areas.
- As the level of the position increases, the incumbent must be able to apply increasingly technical and specialized skills in the field with little supervision.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies related to irrigation system failures or parks infrastructure during nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Performs related work as required and assigned.
