A firefighter with the City of Lafayette works a rotating schedule of 48-hours on-duty followed 96-hours off. The Lafayette Fire Department serves a population of 34, 000 people providing top-notch Advanced Life Support EMS and transport, aggressive structural firefighting, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response. The department responds throughout southeast Boulder County working with a number of regional fire departments through robust automatic-aid agreements.

About the Fire DepartmentThe Lafayette Fire Department's mission statement is People First. This mission statement is simple, direct, and memorable and aims to encompass external and internal interactions and guide staff in how customers and colleagues are treated.
The Lafayette Fire Department provides services from two fire stations. There are 37-line staff including two lieutenants and a battalion chief on each shift. Annually the department responds to approximately 4, 000 calls for service and works closely with neighboring agencies. The department participates in county-wide hazardous materials, wildland, and technical rescue programs. Firefighters are compensated under a collective bargaining agreement that will be renegotiated in 2025.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE: Perform modern firefighting and EMS principles, practices, and procedures. Understand and operate in the Incident Management System.
SKILL: Work cooperatively with supervisors, peers, other City employees and the public. Communicate orally with customers, clients, and the public in person, on the telephone, or electronically. Work safely and follow training directives.
ABILITY: Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts, proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar. Operate assigned department apparatus, City computers and applicable software, training equipment, recording and photography equipment, etc. Learn job related material through structured lecture and reading, and through oral instruction and observation, which can take place in classroom settings and/or in an on-the-job setting. Ability to be subjected to physical exertion over prolonged periods of time which may include lifting heavy objects, climbing stairs and ladders. May be exposed to severe weather conditions, hazardous conditions to include heat and toxic elements, severely injured and ill patients, communicable and infectious diseases, etc. Must be tolerant of confined spaces, heights, and the restrictive conditions while wearing SCBA and other protective gear.
TRAINING: Colorado Drivers License (or ability to obtain), Basic Life Support (CPR). National Registry or Colorado EMT or Paramedic certification, and High School Diploma.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Answers emergency and non-emergency alarms throughout Lafayette Fire Department's response area and automatic aid areas and performs task level operations.
- Provides emergency medical services to sick and injured patients consistent with level of training, acts allowed, and adherence to medical protocols.
- Functions as a firefighter at the task level of IMS by advancing hose, fire attack with hose streams, ventilation, rescue, extrication, salvage, overhaul, etc.
- Recognizes hazardous conditions, such as a back draft, presence of harmful atmospheric contaminants, and possible structural collapse and takes appropriate action to assure the safety of firefighters and the public.
- Communicates effectively within the IMS, conveying unusual conditions and/or dynamics of an incident.
- Inspects commercial structures within the fire departments fire code enforcement program.
- Participates in department community outreach efforts including station tours, presentations, and special event attendance.
- Performs general maintenance work in the up-keep of department property.
- Ensures the response readiness of the assigned apparatus and its equipment.
- Ensures compliance with all City and fire department policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
- When driving, ensures safe response while operating department apparatus, and positions the apparatus on responses to maximize safety and access to the scene.
- Maintains records of fire equipment and apparatus maintenance.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of district geography.
- Follows established confidentiality procedures.
- Demonstrates a positive and constructive attitude toward customers and co-workers. Serves as a Lafayette Fire ambassador in the community, sharing concerns and ideas expressed by the community with the fire department administration.
- Maintains training and education to meet the demands of job responsibility.
