Department:
Retail Pharmacy

Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, The Retail Pharmacy Manager is responsible for the daily operations of hospital outpatient and Specialty pharmacy according to hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. The Manager recommends innovations in the practice and function of the hospital outpatient pharmacy to Administration and carries out mutually agreed upon programs. Manages site finances, expenses and revenue performance that achieve and exceed hospital financial goals.

  • Ensures that patient or customer pharmaceutical needs are effectively met by establishing staffing mix, policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of services.


  • Exercises professional judgment in imparting therapeutic and drug information to patients and health professionals.


  • Supervises the maintenance and dissemination of drug information through in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff and retail customers.


  • Oversees the budget and manage financials of retail and specialty pharmacies for operational profitability.


  • Implements and manages employee prescription dispensing.


  • Implement and manage hospital discharge prescription program including but not limited to "Meds to Bed" program.


  • Develops and manages pharmacy purchasing, pre-packing procedures, inventory management and reconciliations that meet hospital and retail patient and customer needs.


  • Performs patient initial and follow up assessments and specialty prescriptions verification and dispensing.


  • Performs therapies management and compliance. Evaluates laboratory results and adjusts therapies as necessary.


  • Performs clear clinical progress notes/documentations. Ensures patient safety by managing medication use processes including prescribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring patient outcomes.


  • Maintains accuracy and confidentiality of patient Electronic Health Record records.


  • Confers with Medical Director of the Service, referring physician, or other physician when appropriate.


  • Provides extensive patient education and performs care coordination with caregiver, family members, social service, and other healthcare providers.


  • Reports patient's outcome Metrics and quality assurance.


  • Is competent in the range of treatment needed by the following patients as appropriate to the ages served by the hospital.

  • Provides leadership and supervision regarding departmental performance by completing staff evaluations, maintaining staff competency and development, adequate staffing, and assures all work in specified areas is completed while maintaining a high level of quality.


  • Is a role model for departmental behavior, and provides and promotes a positive working environment for departmental staff to ensure strong employee morale, motivation and productivity.


  • Supervises and manages the workflow of Pharmacy Technicians, Meds to Bed Coordinators and Pharmacy Clerks to ensure the department's role and function in the Healthcare System supports the delivery of the highest possible standard of patient care, and customer service for staff and visitors within the available resources.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: PharmD or Masters in Pharmacy required.

Licensure: Current California Registered Pharmacist license required.

Experience: A minimum of one (1) year experience as a retail pharmacist or residency in an ASHP accredited program required. One (1) year experience in a supervisory retail pharmacist role involved with program development and/or supervision of personnel.

The hourly rate for this position is $76.24 - $95.30. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for this position.
