Department: Cardiac Sonography
Works under the supervision of the Cardiology Assistant Director (AD). Performs cardiac ultrasound procedures on patients and completes associated support activities as directed by the Cardiology Assistant Director (AD) and/or attending Cardiologist. Manages Cardiac Sonography workflow and daily operations. Makes recommendations to the Assistant Director (AD) for best practices. Assists staff as necessary and acts as a resource. Refers staff to Assistant Director (AD)/designee as appropriate regarding issues and concerns. Prepares policies and procedures as indicated and assigned. Trains staff and orients registry staff as necessary. Participates in the interviewing and hiring process. Assists the Assistant Director (AD) with projects as assigned. Attends continuing education as necessary and prepares in-service training for/with staff. Provides input for performance evaluations. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
- Pulls contrast media as appropriate for procedure.
- Provides age-appropriate care to the patients served by the Cardiology Department.
- Records procedure results in Echo Lab charts, log, digital archive, etc.
- Immediately informs the Cardiology Assistant Director (AD) and/or attending Cardiologist of life threatening or questionable test results, etc.
- Assumes active role in the Cardiology Department's Continuous Quality Improvement Program.
- Enters into computer terminals a variety of patient information.
- Ensures appropriate documentation is maintained and updated.
- Performs preventative maintenance of cardiology equipment and accessories, and coordinates equipment upgrades and repairs.
- Performs related duties and assists the Assistant Director (AD) with special assignments/projects as assigned.
- Uses appropriate communication and team-work skills with working with patients, co-workers, and other hospital staff.
- Coordinates and facilitates the Cardiac Sonography workflow and daily operations working with Sonography and clerical staff, physicians and the department leadership.
- Evaluates and recommends changes in workflow, exams, etc. to reflect the most current techniques, strategies, and medical breakthroughs in testing and equipment.
- Assists staff as necessary and refers staff to Assistant Director (AD)/designee as appropriate.
- Prepares and manages the Cardiac Sonography schedule and daily assignments.
- Develops policies and procedures and trains staff as indicated.
- Orients new and contracted staff to department, policies and procedures.
- Attends continuing education as necessary and prepares in-service training for presentation to staff.
- Assists Assistant Director (AD)/designee with preparation of Performance Evaluations. Participates on committees as directed.
- Implements new procedures as required.
- Participates in networking with other facilities/groups as requested.
- Performs as supportive liaison between Assistant Director (AD) and physicians.
- Provides competency training and monitoring for echo staff.
- Maintains proficiency with all new related hospital technologies including Information System upgrades, Echo Picture Archiving Computer Systems (PACS), and Cardiovascular Information Systems (CVIS).
- Serves as a workflow resource to physicians for new advancements in qualitative, quantitative, and information technologies such as 3D/4D cardiac ultrasound and related applications as well as a resource for the daily utilization of PACs and CVIS systems.
- Participates in the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Labs (ICAEL) process for the lab.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Work requires knowledge generally acquired through a high school education or GED.
Licensure: ARDMS/RDCS or CCI registry in Adult Echocardiography required. Pediatric Echocardiography registry and experience preferred. Current BLS/Healthcare Provider status as per American Heart Association standards required.
Experience: At least one year experience in Adult Echocardiography. Requires participation in Echo on-call.
