Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Principal Engineer, Development Engineering, to be located in Santa Clara, CA.
As the Principal Engineer, you will have the unique opportunity to lead and drive cost engineering initiatives on our next generation product development roadmap for the Technical Operations Department within the Supply Chain organization. This role will include product design simplification and improving existing platform design to meet future cost goals. The incumbent will develop key capabilities to drive future product cogs target and influence future manufacturing approach, material, suppliers’ strategy with the aim of maintaining product quality, simplify manufacturability, and drive cost. You will play a vital role in shaping the future of surgery by collaborating with the Ottava Research and Development team, manufacturing engineering, suppliers’ development and quality team to drive growth for the company. Your contributions will directly impact the quality, manufacturability and cost of our products, ultimately making a life-changing impact on patients worldwide.
Responsibilities:
Lead a cross functional team to develop a cost engineering roadmap to drive growth and scale
Responsible for driving costs by proposing alternative technical solutions without compromising quality or performance. This includes design simplification, optimizing existing design, selecting cost-effective materials, or improving processes to achieve better value.
Spearhead technical feasibility of projects and how design decisions impact cost, drive and assess different design options, materials, and manufacturing methods to provide insights into the cost implications of each
Lead formal project design reviews and change review discussions.
Collaborate with cross functional teams, such as sourcing, manufacturing, R& D, supplier development, quality, finance, and project management to drive delivery, in depth knowledge of DFM/DFA and provide technical insights into cost estimates, bids, and budget discussions.
Partners closely with the J& J MedTech Source/Procurement organization regarding supplier selection and projected component costs.
Efforts include reviewing technical design and risk assessment to ensure risks are mitigated and influence costs, such as technology limitations, engineering complexity, or design changes
Develop and collaborate with key strategic external partners to develop cost effective solutions to support business goals
Develop a core development engineering team that supports future cost engineering initiatives and build capabilities that support long term business goals
Creates, owns, and maintains project expenses & capital budgets.
Support senior management to provide strategic updates on cost engineering initiatives and project related activities
Assists with project Phase In / Phase Out strategy to ensure cost engineering initiative of Direct Purchased Materials are realized.
Qualifications:
Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent University degree required; focused degree specifically in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical engineering or related field preferred. Advanced degree preferred
Experience and Skills:
Required:
Minimum ten (10) years of relevant professional work experience in similar capacity
Strong technical know-how, complex design, familiarity with Design for X (DFx), technology transfer or life cycle management
Demonstrated understanding of product technical requirements and related production assembly requirements, and how both can affect final product quality.
Experience in Design for Manufacturing or Assembly (DFM/A) for supplier/vendor technologies such as plastic injection molding, metal machining, metal forming, metal injection molding and or any other emerging technologies.
Accomplishments in similar cost engineering initiatives
Effective leadership experience
Project management experience
Organization, prioritization, relationship development, conflict resolution, and team collaboration
Effective and proactive written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
Preferred:
Medical device / surgical robotic experience
Experience in dynamic parts / assembly design (eg: Gear trains, planetary/ harmonics system, moving parts)
Familiar with new engineering technologies, methodologies, and tools that can optimize both technical execution and costs
Creative, motivated, proactive, and focused on achieving results
Sound analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Capability to resolve challenges, devise and implement strategies to validate crucial design principles.
Methodical and comprehensive, yet flexible and able to easily adjust to evolving requirements and navigate in a fast-paced environment to meet tight schedules
Other:
May require up to 20% domestic and/or international travel to other locations and sites (project dependent)

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year.
