We are searching for the best talent for The Laboratory Manager - Preclinical Surgery Operations to be in Santa Clara

Purpose:

The Laboratory Manager - Preclinical Surgery Operations in Preclinical Affairs will work within the animal facilities of Johnson & Johnson MedTech locations in Santa Clara, CA. These facilities support the execution of preclinical studies required to competitively position robotic and digital solutions for regulatory approval and clinical acceptance. This is a hands-on role within the Preclinical and Clinical Engineering teams and represents an outstanding opportunity to work cross functionally with various groups that utilize the Clinical Labs. Assistance and support in this space will be essential to the development of Ethicon’s highly innovative digital surgery platform. This also involves supporting R& D, V& V, and clinical training environments. The facility is a BSL-2 research labs that work with cadavers, large animals, and maintain AAALAC-accreditation for in-vivo work.

You will be responsible for:

Under supervision of the Test Facility Manager and in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, this position will:

  • Manage a team of technicians and facility operations in scheduling and resourcing to support GLP, R& D, V& V, and clinical training activities.
  • Maintain compliance with AAALAC standards, IACUC protocols, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and ensure humane endpoints.
  • Work closely with veterinarians and surgical teams to ensure ethical treatment and documentation in all in vivo procedures.
  • Oversee all BSL-2 activities, ensuring alignment with institutional biosafety protocols and OSHA guidelines.
  • Ensure appropriate handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous materials, cadaveric specimens, and animal waste.
  • Lead cross-functional coordination for research involving human cadavers, ex vivo tissues, and large animal models, in both terminal and survival studies.
  • Collaborate with clinical engineers, scientists, surgeons, and external partners to support technical operations in a high-paced Medtech environment.
  • Supervise and develop staff involved in study conduct, surgical support, data collection, sterilization, and equipment setup.
  • Drive culture of compliance, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Adhering to environmental health and safety compliance in our labs per company policies.
  • Following Lab SOP’s and Good Documentation Practices to comply with GLP under 21 CFR 58.
  • Performs other duties assigned as needed.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Experience in a surgical operating room or biotech laboratory environment is required.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams as a leader in a high pace environment.
  • Some technical understanding of how to operate and handle various laboratory equipment is desired.
  • Experience working in medical device research.
  • Some understanding of clinical anatomy and surgical methods.
  • Familiarity with GLP requirements under 21 CFR 58.
  • Interest and ability to learn surgical procedures in the Preclinical Lab environment.
  • Attention to detail and good verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Familiarity working with Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills are essential.
  • Comfortable handling and working with cadaveric and animal tissue is essential.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Shipping, receiving and storing Cadaveric tissue and laboratory supplies
  • Assembly of laboratory furniture and equipment

LOCATION & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primary location of the position is at either Johnson & Johnson MedTech animal facilities (Santa Clara, CA).
  • Domestic travel may be occasionally required for training purposes (< 10%).

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

$121, 000- $194, 350

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.
