Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson, is recruiting for an Associate Director, Oncology External Innovation to be located in Brisbane, CA.

The Associate Director, Oncology External Innovation will be responsible for identifying opportunities and implementing the external innovation plan as part of a team that partners with Johnson & Johnson's Global External Innovation Network, including the Global J& J Innovation Center (Boston), JLABs, Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation (JJDC) and Johnson & Johnson Business Development (JBD) in order to accelerate the development of an innovative portfolio of Oncology based projects and solutions. The goal is to expand the drug discovery pipeline for Johnson & Johnson Oncology through assessment and execution on external strategies with academic, biotech and venture partners. In this position, the candidate must demonstrate expertise in Oncology / Immune Oncology, influencing skills and organizational savvy in order to effectively interact with internal partners to drive efficient evaluation and execution of external opportunities. Similarly, the candidate must help drive similar interactions with external partners in order to efficiently evaluate and execute on license/collaboration/externalization of novel ideas and assets.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Landscape/search for novel external opportunities in multiple modalities on an ongoing basis
  • Evaluation of novel opportunities (including MTA/lab-based evaluation) as part of a multi-function diligence team
  • Delivery of research plans based on input from both internal/external stakeholders
  • Participation in the deal process with new venture/transaction/commercial in order to help drive decision making at all levels
  • Post-deal execution follow-up/management as required. Operational responsibilities include identification, scouting, opportunity landscaping the external ecosystem, initial evaluation, and partnering of external opportunities / innovative solutions in priority areas of focus inclusive of small molecule and protein modalities and novel platforms, to accelerate the path to disease interception, prevention, and/or cure of cancer.

General duties include:

  • Expands the drug discovery pipeline for Johnson & Johnson through identifying and assessing novel opportunities in line with the global Oncology TA strategy
  • Establishes new partnerships, as member of Oncology TA and Boston IC team
  • Participates in diligence teams in a matrix organization across Discovery, JBIO, DPDS, clinical, commercial etc
  • Helps establish project plans in partnership with the internal organization
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with key Oncology TA members, TA External Innovation Leaders & members of the TA Senior Leadership team.
  • Asist in development of a partnering strategy that supports the Oncology Therapeutic Area strategies, identify and triage opportunities consistent with the agreed strategy
  • Participates in cross-functional due diligence teams to efficiently assess and execute in-licensing, collaboration and alliance opportunities for projects and solutions from inception through Proof of Concept.
  • Develops and refines project plans in collaboration with external business partners and internal personnel to ultimately drive scientific and clinical progress.
  • Works in matrixed Team to prepare scientific and business rationale for any recommendations to enable the opportunity business case for approval and execution to Oncology key stakeholders and GEI/Janssen R& D leadership
  • Develop, cultivate, and manage relationships with J& J Innovation Centers, JLABs and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation personnel at each of the global locations to enhance networking opportunities and to partner capabilities in transactional support.
  • Stay current with emerging scientific, technological and medical innovations within the field.
  • Exemplify company’s value proposition as a “partner of choice” to attract potential partners.

Requirements:

  • Education: PhD required
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in Oncology and/or Immunology-related research required
  • Previous experience in conducting/managing research in Oncology and/or Immunology
  • Experience with drug discovery/development; small & large molecule discovery/development as well as immune oncology experience preferred
  • The ability to develop (and maintain) strategic partnerships, both internal and external
  • Ability to think and act strategically, anticipate road-blocks and map out next steps is also required.
  • Has the necessary experience and scientific imagination to recognize early-stage innovation that has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes in the future.
  • Interested, curious and open mindset is required
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills and ability to matrix manage key stakeholders in a complex team environment is required
  • Attention to detail is required

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $136, 000 to $234, 140

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
