Under minimum supervision, fabricate optical parts following established procedures utilizing one or more standard processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Hands-on Optical Fabrication - 75%

• Performs all the following fabrication processes: cleaning, grinding sawing, beveling, blocking, and polishing
• Be able to grind and polish plano/spherical parts to tight tolerances (Spindle or Double-side methodologies preferred)
• Be able to maintain .0001" parallelism over 26" block and flatness to ¼ wave over 8" aperture
• Be able to achieve 1 wave P.V. and 30 second arc wedge over 4" aperture.
• Able to use calibrated test plate to interpret surface flatness
• Able to use interferometer to interpret surface flatness, wedge, and fizeau fringes.
• Maintain production process equipment using standard operating procedures
• Capable of reading test plates, Mahr, micrometers and ultra-sonic gauges to produce specifications to WI's
• Complete general orientation of Sapphire Ops / Facility and SOPs for employee conduct related to EH& S. This includes the operation of the crane system

Materials Handling & Safety - 5%

• Follow proper material handling procedures for each material used
• Follow proper safety rules and precautions, policies and procedures specific to fabrication processes, including the use of protective apparel

Tools & Solvent Use - 5%

• Use hand tools such as micrometer for diameter of lens, depth gauge with bar for SAG, group gauge on fixture for wedge, drop gauge for center thickness, calipers for diameter of lens, dial comparator for curve of radii, vapor degreaser air gun

Paperwork & Recordkeeping - 5%

• Complete necessary paperwork and record manually

Training & supervise - 5%

• May train employees in the grinding area only
• Have clarification of objectives, participation, communication and an active willingness to help your peers, techs, process engineers and supervisors to meet customer deliveries and company objectives
• Help management to promote teamwork participation

Education & Experience

• High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and comprehend English language, blueprints and written instructions.
• Ability to understand verbally the English language and follow directions.
• To achieve this position, must demonstrate expertise in the grinding area and have basic knowledge in the polishing, and possess 3+ years directly related experience or education.

  • Ability to calculate figures and perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
  • Ability to use a scientific calculator and perform basic calculations.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

• Sit, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms
• Demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity and care when handling delicate parts

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and/or move:

• Up to 10 pounds frequently
• Up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance

Vision requirements include:

• Close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• Ability to inspect parts using an eye loupe and read small graduations on a micrometer and depth gauge
• Must be able to wear safety gear for extended periods of time
