Vitalant Research Institute (VRI) advances transfusion medicine and cellular therapies through rigorous, data-driven research that improves patient outcomes and supports Vitalant's life-saving mission. To help power this work, VRI is seeking a Senior Statistician to lead the design, management, and analysis of complex research datasets that translate scientific inquiry into meaningful evidence. In this role, you'll provide statistical leadership across multiple studies-shaping study design, guiding database structure, and executing advanced analytical methods that support high-quality research publications and operational decision-making. Your expertise will ensure our research is statistically sound, methodologically rigorous, and positioned to make a real-world impact.

As a Sr. Statistician, you'll get to:
  • Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff; address performance and personnel issues effectively
  • Design, build, and manage complex, server-based research databases integrating data from multiple blood bank systems
  • Ensure data quality through validation, normalization, standardization, and rigorous cleaning processes
  • Partner with investigators to develop research hypotheses and design statistically sound studies
  • Provide statistical expertise including study design, power and sample size calculations, and selection of appropriate analytic methods
  • Execute advanced statistical analyses and interpret results for audiences with varying levels of technical expertise
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts, operational reports, and research publications
  • Support grant and contract applications through data analysis and required reporting
  • Mentor and guide junior staff in database management and analytic techniques
  • Supervise statistical and database programming personnel


Requirements

Knowledge/ Education
Master's degree in statistics, biostatics, epidemiology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
PhD in related field preferred.
Knowledge of data management principles, data cleaning procedures, quality assurance techniques and data validation methods required.
Demonstrated experience with SQL and relational database management systems (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.) required.
Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, Stata, SPSS or R) required.
Knowledge of programming languages, relational database structures, dimensional data modeling and data warehouse support required.
Experience with genetic data analysis preferred.
Programming ability and knowledge of open source data analysis platforms (e.g. R or Python ecosystems) preferred.
Familiarity with 'big data' analysis techniques such as machine learning and/or AI preferred.
Prior scientific publications preferred.

Experience
Seven years related experience required. To include:
• Five years related experience in a research setting.
• Experience working with large, complex databases and integrating data from a variety of sources and formats.
• Demonstrated experience in at least one SQL and relational database tool.
• Demonstrated experience in at least one statistical analysis software program/platform.
Familiarity with the R and Python data science ecosystems, especially the tidyverse suite, SciPy, NumPy, and pandas preferred.

Ability to identify and implement appropriate statistical methods based on outcome measure and research question.
Strong electronic data processing and analysis skills.
