What will your job look like?

MTM Transit in partnership with Sun Shuttle Dial A Ride is looking for Full-Time CDL Trainer to join our team in Tucson, AZ. The CDL Trainer will prepare learners to accomplish desired results by developing and delivering training. In addition to engaging learners, the Trainer will be responsible for the transfer of knowledge or skills.

The Trainer delivers high-quality CDL theory and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training to ensure all operators meet FMCSA ELDT, Arizona, FTA, and company requirements. This role provides classroom instruction, range training, and on-road coaching, evaluates trainee performance, and ensures compliance with all CDL, safety, and regulatory standards. This position works closely with internal stakeholders to support safe, compliant, and professional service delivery.

What you’ll do:

  • Deliver CDL theory and BTW training consistent with FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements

  • Conduct classroom, range, and public-road instruction for CDL applicants

  • Deliver PASS (Passenger Assistance, Safety & Sensitivity) training consistent with FTA, ADA, and MTM Transit standards.

  • Maintain compliance with FTA, FMCSA, ADA, and MTM Transit standards

  • Evaluate trainee competency and document performance and ELDT progress

  • Maintain accurate training records in accordance with ELDT and company policy

  • Provide refresher, remedial, and corrective-action coaching as needed

  • Partner with Operations and Safety to support a strong safety culture

  • Support new hire onboarding and orientation

  • Ensure proper supervision of CLP holders during on-road training in accordance with Arizona requirements

  • Promote professionalism, customer service proficiency, and defensive driving skills

  • Identify areas of opportunities amongst learners and/or content; take action to correct

  • Develop and implement training based on needs and direction of the business

  • Audit, update and communicate changes to training material

  • Provide coaching, evaluation, and feedback for all learners

  • Conduct training, with an emphasis on safety

  • Provide ongoing support for learners

  • Facilitate and participate in meetings, town halls or other relevant information sharing events

  • Generate a high learning transfer of knowledge or skills from the trainer to the learner

  • Measure learner satisfaction and transfer of knowledge or skills

  • Make recommendations on employees transitioning into BTW training, retraining or possible termination based on passing/failing classroom training

  • Administer remedial training (ie: retraining after preventable accidents or missed KPIs (OTP, complaints, missed trips)

  • Tracking training hours, maintaining driver training files and submitting training reports

What you’ll need:

Experience, Education & Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Driver' s license - Valid CDL with passenger endorsement

  • Meets FMCSA ELDT Instructor qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years CDL driving experience

  • 2 + years’ experience in customer service

  • 1 + year experience in training others

  • Maintain PASS Trainer Certification; can be attained post-hire

  • Strong knowledge of the Tucson area geography and routes

  • No reckless driving offenses within the past 5 years

  • No DUI or DWI convictions

  • No convictions involving moral turpitude within the past 5 years

  • Possess valid authorization to work in the United States

  • Must be able to pass a DOT Physical and pre-employment drug screening

  • Must pass criminal background check and investigation & Motor Vehicle Record check

Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of CDL, FMCSA, ELDT, FTA, and ADA requirements

  • Ability to instruct and coach adult learners at varying skill levels

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and observation skills

  • Strong organizational and evaluation abilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and training technology

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

  • Ability to explain complex subjects in a clear and interesting way as well as emphasize the importance of content

  • Ability to accomplish duties/tasks with little direct supervision

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and deadlines

  • Ability to coach employees

  • Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot

  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees as well as external customers

  • Ability to build relationships

  • Ability to handle confidential information

Hourly Rate: $25-28/hr
