General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled routine labor functions for assigned Department/Division performing building and grounds maintenance, routine construction activities, street maintenance and drainage work, landscaping activities, assisting with equipment maintenance, and operating heavy machinery, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.

The ideal candidate will have experience in performing routine labor functions in facilities and parks maintenance activities such as setting forms and pouring concrete; performing construction activities; performing building facilities general maintenance and repairs; check, installing and repairing irrigation systems; mowing, weeding, planting and pruning; marking fields and setting up for special events; maintaining equipment; routine cleaning of amenities, including restrooms, and emptying trash.

Special Note:

This position may require you to work weekends and/or holidays on occasion.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and minimal experience in construction, landscaping, street and building facilities maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Driver's License of the appropriate class.

Essential Functions

Perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled duties in maintenance, construction, and repairs.

Maintain road rights-of-way clearing debris, cutting weeds, and cleaning washes using required hand tools.

Performs routine maintenance to assigned tools and equipment.

Assist with asphalt patching and concrete labor.

Required to perform daily vehicle inspections and clean and wash equipment.

Operate power tools such as chain saws, concrete saws, air hammers, pavement breakers, tampers, and two-way radios.

May be assigned to on-call/standby status.

Maintains City buildings and grounds by service calls and preventive maintenance, collecting trash and debris from washes, drains, and other areas, raising and taking down flags, decorating the City for holidays, cleaning cabanas and restrooms, and spraying for bugs.

Assists in performing routine construction activities including remodeling, plumbing repairs, drywall repairs, painting, welding, fabricating, replacing light fixtures, carpentry work, roofing, and moving and assembling furniture.

Operates heavy equipment including excavators, backhoes, and tractors to dig trenches for irrigation lines, backfill, and maintenance.

Operates a variety of trucks and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

Operates Irrigation Centrally Controlled (ICC) controllers; assists sprinkler valve operations.

Repairs electrical wiring for irrigation valves as needed or required and collaborates with internal electrical laborers.

Assists tree and limb removal crews along with landscaping crews to trim and mulch grounds.

Repairs irrigation valves, pipes, and main and lateral lines in the parks.

Performs duties in the maintenance of parks and fields by marking and maintaining fields, setting up for special events, and making park signs.

Picks-up and delivers various equipment and supplies; inventories materials and supplies; stocks vehicles with parts; ensures equipment is stored in proper areas.

Complies with and promotes safe practices in agreement with the safety rules and procedures set forth.

Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers, training and sharing knowledge.

Complete required daily logs and reports.

Staff must meet and maintain required training for Forklift and Flagger Certification.

Operates and maintains motor vehicles or other work-related equipment requiring a valid driver license.

Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, street maintenance, and repair procedures; some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.

Skill in the use of specialized equipment and hand tools to which assigned.

Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, and the general public.

Working Conditions

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
