Job Title - Associate Magistrate

Salary - $46.35 - $51.17 Hourly

Special Note: Requires extreme confidentiality. Requires non-standard schedule to include days, nights, weekends and holidays; to be scheduled no more than 29 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished professional who is committed to valuing people with respect, integrity and actions. They must have the ability to interact with judicial and administrative staff and render sound legal opinions. They must be a person of exceptional character and integrity and have an understanding of the principles of civil and criminal law, court procedures, rules of evidence and appeals procedures and have the ability to comply with City Court case processing policy. They must have exceptional administrative and communication skills, and have the ability to participate in judicial education as requested. They must have a flexible work schedule and be available to perform wedding ceremonies both during and after normal business hours. Prior judicial experience is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in a field related to the area of assignment and moderate experience in law enforcement, practicing law, or acting in a judicial capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training based on assignment.

Valid Arizona Driver License of appropriate class

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and are subject to change as needs and job requirements change. Position assignments may vary. Presides over initial appearances, arraignments, pre-trial conference, civil traffic hearings, probation violation hearings, restitution hearings, status hearings, order to show cause hearings, sentencings, bench trials, and other hearings.

Adjudicates misdemeanor, criminal traffic, civil traffic, and city code violations.

Determines pleas, motions, sentencing issues, restitution, revocation or probation violation hearings, and bond forfeiture hearings.

Conducts hearings on petitions for protective orders.

Issues court orders.

Reviews and signs criminal complaints.

Reviews and grants search warrants.

Research legal problems and prepares legal opinions; interprets City, State and federal laws, ordinances, statutes and court decisions; analyzes evidence presented in court and applies existing laws, rules, and regulations.

Assists the City Judge in administering court policies, procedures, and practices.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of rules of Judicial Conduct (Supreme Court Rule 81), Municipal Court procedures and operations, Arizona Rule of Court, state statutes, City ordinances, and applicable case law.

Skill in presiding over courtroom hearings, conducting legal research, establishing, and maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers and other professionals, communication, and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with local, state, and federal elected officials, coworkers, the general public, etc sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Ability to make independent judgments and quick decisions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings; ability to comprehend a variety of documents, i.e. police reports and lab reports; ability to define problems, assess facts, and draw conclusions; ability to handle pressure, work under stressful conditions and respond to crisis situations; ability to maintain high moral character and comply with Court rules of conduct; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

This work is sedentary and requires exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
