Hours/Shift: Full Time/M-F 8: 00a-4: 30p

Position Purpose: The Clinical Informatics Pharmacist is responsible for supporting pharmacy software applications and participating in the procurement, installation and support of other computerized systems. The position requires strong analytical skills in gathering information from users, defining work problems and designing a system of procedures to resolve problems. This position is also responsible for providing professional consultative oversight to the maintenance, upgrading, evaluation and implementation of pharmacy computer software systems and associated pharmacy automation systems; and for maintaining competency of the systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervises, coordinates, and participates in pharmacy hardware, equipment and software effective management, while also representing Pharmacy in intradepartmental information system activities.
  • Serves as an expert resource and consultant in supporting the Pharmacy Information System, and Pharmacy software interfaces and connectivity with pharmacy automation systems such as unit-based dispensing cabinets and point-of-care bedside medication scanning technologies, “smart” infusion pump systems, financial management systems, inventory management and diversion detection systems, etc. Specific areas where consultative support may be provided include, but are not limited to, medication formulary and inventory maintenance; pharmacy informatics operations support; policy and procedure development; software customization; upgrade planning, implementation and testing; database management and mining; training systems; and development, testing, maintenance and troubleshooting performance of EHR software application/functionality, e.g., pharmacy, CPOE, BCMA, billing, inventory, laboratory and any other clinical information systems, and various pharmacy automation technologies.
  • Serves as an expert resource and communication liaison between Electronic Health Record (EHR) and CPOE project team members as it relates to developing, implementing testing and maintaining the medication component of the EHR and CPOE systems.
  • Serves as a primary staff member in the Pharmacy Department responsible for the medication programming dimensions of the CPOE system. Participates in all levels of Pharmacy EHR/CPOE project plan implementation; collaborates with advanced and mid-level programmers to develop, test and implement the Pharmacy modules within the EHR/CPOE software. Specific areas of focus include EHR/CPOE patient care area operations redesign; medication order entry procedures and order set development; testing and programming of new EHR/CPOE functionality including rules integration, alerts and clinical decision support; medication administration data transmission to/from EHR point of care bedside scanning technology; pharmacy application uni- and bi-directional orders interface functionality, demographics and allergy interface development and maintenance; and coordination of the information systems EHR/CPOE pharmacy clinical design and programmer team. Carries out assigned priorities related to EHR/CPOE implementation. Other responsibilities include development of EHR/CPOE training materials, overseeing drug Formulary and assuring systems are in place to maintain consistency of data presentation in pharmacy/EHR/CPOE processes. Approximately twenty percent of the Informatics Pharmaciest time will be spent on advanced CPOE medication programming activities.
  • Assists in the management of Pharmacy financial systems to assure cost effective operations.
  • Trains new staff and assists in patient education programs and activities.
  • Maintains pharmacist skills to be effective in distribution.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with B.S. Pharmacy degree or PharmD
  • Certification/Licensure: Registered Pharmacist License in the State of Arizona.**
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of pharmacy technology systems experience in an acute care setting; Experience using word processing, database applications, desktop publishing or spreadsheet software; Knowledge of pharmacy services within an integrated health-system.
  • Skills: Stong analytical, organizational, communication, and a considerable amount of innovation and creativity skills supporting complex medication software.

**New employees eligible for AZ Board of Pharmacy pharmacist license, will be assigned appropriate tasks during licensure processing. Residents need to have a license that allows the practice of pharmacy in the state of Arizona prior to start date (intern license, pharmacist license or temporary pharmacist license).
