Description:
Primary Function:
The Survey Instrument Operator I will be trained to operate various types of Survey equipment, including electronic total stations, GPS base stations and receivers, data collectors (survey controllers), digital levels, and automatic levels. Instrument Operators are responsible for keeping the survey truck and equipment clean, organized, and batteries charged and ready for each daily work assignment. As part of the field survey crew/team, Instrument Operators work under supervision to assist the Survey Crew Chief on a day-to-day basis to do Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Construction Layout, Utility Surveys, and other types of surveying as assigned.
Primary Duties:
- Arrive at work at assigned time, properly dressed, and prepared to work
- Assist Party Chief in researching and gathering of information
- Clear brush and trees using a machete and brush axe
- Assist in setting up appropriate safety signs and cones as directed
- Properly wear appropriate safety equipment and clothing
- Assist with location of boundary markers using magnetic location equipment
- As directed, upload point files and hand-enter coordinates in the data collector
- Learn to set up electronic equipment and use data collector for the location of objects and lines
- Learn to use prescribed point and line coding and correctly save collected points
- Learn to export files from data collector for download into project files at the office
- Ensure the truck is fully equipped, organized and batteries charged daily
- Represent the company in a professional, polite, and respectful manner
- Learn proper field procedures for conducting various types of surveys
- Learn to identify toxic plants, dangerous animals, and insects
- Learn basic first aid
- Obtain OSHA 10-hour safety certification course (company provided)
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of basic math (addition/subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- General understanding of basic field crew operations
- Ability to work and carry heavy objects in extreme weather conditions and harsh terrain
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be team-oriented and self-motivated
- Capable of working with others and following instructions completely and accurately
- Problem Solving & Innovation

- Functional use of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must have valid Driver’s License
