Job Description

The Arc of Central Alabama is hiring a HVAC Technician in Birmingham, AL. This is a full-time position.

Description

The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across all organizational facilities, including group homes, healthcare environments, administrative buildings, and transit-related properties. The role ensures all HVAC systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with CARF standards, infection-control practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Install, inspect, maintain, and repair HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ventilation systems, and exhaust systems
• Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure optimal system performance and longevity
• Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues and implement timely repairs
• Monitor system performance and recommend upgrades or replacements when necessary
• Maintain climate-control systems critical to healthcare and residential environments
• Execute scheduled preventive maintenance programs across all facilities
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and local/state HVAC regulations
• Support infection-control standards by maintaining proper air quality and ventilation in healthcare and residential settings
• Maintain documentation for inspections, maintenance logs, and CARF survey requirements
• Ensure proper refrigerant handling in compliance with EPA guidelines
• Travel between multiple sites (group homes, clinics, offices, transit facilities)
• Respond to urgent HVAC issues and emergency service calls (after-hours as needed)
• Collaborate with maintenance staff on broader facility needs
• Assist with energy-efficiency initiatives and system optimization
• Support inspections, audits, and facility readiness for surveys
• Follow all safety procedures when working with electrical systems, refrigerants, and equipment; maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition
• Track inventory of HVAC parts, filters, and supplies; recommend and request materials and equipment as needed

Preferred IDD-Focused Responsibilities
• Maintain reliable climate control and air quality that supports the comfort and health of persons served
• Prioritize HVAC reliability in group homes and healthcare settings serving individuals with IDD
• Support infection-control ventilation standards in residential and clinical environments
• Respond promptly to HVAC emergencies that could affect the well-being of persons served
• Minimize service disruptions that could impact residents and direct-care operations

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required
• EPA Section 608 Certification required (Type applicable to work performed)
• HVAC technical training, trade certification, or equivalent hands-on experience required
• 3-5 years of HVAC experience preferred (multi-site or healthcare setting strongly preferred)
• Valid driver's license required
• Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical components, and troubleshooting
• Must pass a statewide/criminal background check confirming no convictions for crimes of violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation, or any felony offense
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen

Preferred Qualifications
• EPA Section 608 Universal Certification preferred
• Experience with building automation systems (BAS)
• Experience maintaining HVAC in healthcare, residential/group-home, or multi-site facilities
• Familiarity with CARF standards and infection-control ventilation requirements

Physical & Essential Functions
• Physical requirements include lifting, climbing, bending, and working in confined spaces
• Ability to lift and carry HVAC equipment and parts (up to 50 pounds)
• Ability to work on ladders and rooftops and access mechanical rooms
• Manual dexterity to work with tools, electrical components, and refrigerant systems

Work Environment
• Work performed indoors and outdoors across multiple facilities
• Exposure to heat, cold, noise, and mechanical equipment
• Travel between multiple agency sites; responds to after-hours emergency service calls as neede
