Job Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator operates machinery to support rail repair and maintenance projects. This is a hands-on role that includes excavation, grading, material handling, drainage work, and site restoration in and around active rail work areas. Key Responsibilities Operate equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, and skid steers, based on the project and your qualifications Support rail repair work by moving ballast and other materials, preparing work areas, excavating, grading, and restoring sites Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance checks Work closely with spotters, ground crews, and supervisors when operating near tracks, utilities, and other equipment Report equipment problems and unsafe conditions promptly Complete equipment usage and inspection records Follow site safety procedures and all required rail safety rules Requirements At least 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience in construction, rail, utility, or similar field work Ability to operate equipment safely in tight or changing work areas Experience with excavation, grading, and material handling Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a crew Rail construction or maintenance experience is preferred. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Ability to climb in and out of equipment and lift up to 50 pounds Prolonged sitting and equipment operation, with occasional standing, walking, and bending Work around uneven ground, moving equipment, noise, dust, and vibration Work schedules may vary based on project needs SDAC is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
