SUMMARY:

Directs, coordinates, and manages all aspects of day-to-day Maintenance and Repair (“M& R”) operations at the Whitney Service Center. Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of the company's fleet of trucks and trailers, ensuring that they are kept in excellent working condition by supervising and leading a team of mechanics to ensure that all maintenance and repair work is completed to a high standard. The successful candidate will repair and maintain commercial trucks, trailers, machinery, and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned to support the department or other departments as time allows.

  • Safety is Lynden’s first responsibility to our employees and our customers. This position is a safety-sensitive position and the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Manages the maintenance team at the Whitney Service Center including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, development, promotion, discipline, and discharge of M& R personnel.
  • Works with management and HSSE department to interpret and ensure compliance with company and corporate policies, as well as those policies dictated by DOT, DOL, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Assists in tracking and facilitating of facility maintenance.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company and corporate policies and applicable laws.
  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and identifies operational deficiencies.
  • Adjusts, repairs, services, and/or replaces parts in engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, and other equipment.
  • Adjusts or repairs hydraulic systems and components.
  • Investigates complaints and equipment malfunctions.
  • Installs, services, lubricates, and cleans mechanical devices.
  • Performs scheduled and non-scheduled work to support barge and fleet needs.
  • Coordinates parts and materials needs to the parts department for non-stock items.
  • Analyzes performance of equipment.
  • Sets up and operates manual, electric, pneumatic, and mechanic metal working tools to fabricate and repair parts.
  • Repairs electrical equipment.
  • Initiates procurement of parts as required for equipment repair; responds and acknowledge repair requests.
  • Records daily repairs using M& R maintenance computer software.
  • Trains and supervises M& R employees in all phases of work, including the operation of equipment, use of tools, and methods or procedures of work.
  • Maintains and instructs others on proper safety procedures.
  • Participates in the need and selection of equipment in preparation of the capital plan.
  • Recommends improved work methods and procedures.
  • Attends meetings and classes or seminars to remain current with topics and techniques.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and travel to Central and Western Alaska Ports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess mechanical inclination and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent, or five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Experience and considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment, lift trucks and other driven equipment and tools.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to read, write, and interpret routine reports and correspondence; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with customers, contractors, vendors, managers, and other employees of the organization. Strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, area, circumference, volume, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations; ability to read and understand wire and hydraulic schematics.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, and the ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to organize and follow through to completion projects and tasks assigned or assumed; ability to provide objective and decisive action(s) necessary to resolve any/all issues with minimal disruption to operational performance.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge including database entry and Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Visio and Outlook and basic computer program skills on Sutwik.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hazardous materials training.
  • Detail oriented, good interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible to work extended hours and adaptable to change.
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports in the provided maintenance software.
  • Ability to analyze repair mechanical failures.
  • Must be capable of working with little or no supervision as well as working as part of a team.
  • Must provide own toolbox and sufficient hand tools to perform most assigned duties.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Alaska Commercial Driving License with air brake endorsement.
  • Valid DOT medical card.
  • Forklift Operation Certification.
  • FHWA Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.19) and Brake Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.25).
